Hi, we have only one month left of our bikepacking adventure in Kenya.
We are going to cycle all the way to Masai Mara and there's going to be a lot happening in this
video. We're going to go inside of one of the most craziest shops we ever have seen
and you're welcome to join us for this adventure. Let's go.
Like with the cows, you pass the lions. Yeah, they just give you their way.
See, lions don't eat anyone.
Good morning. Good morning everyone. Just last night we slept here behind this family's
house. They have a farm actually here. Yeah, a nice farm. It was very nice. We have hyenas
just around us all the night because we heard them. In this region people a lot do agriculture
actually. When we are going to go towards Masai Mara, over there people do a lot of
basically animal herding. That's it. Masai people, they live there and they don't really
do agriculture in that region. Okay, interesting. Yeah. And the views are beautiful as well.
This year has been a really great year for the people here in Kenya because it's been a lot of
rain. Of course they have had some floods also but rain is really good because when there's rain
they really grow everything. So whatever they need basically more or less. So that's really
really nice. Two years ago when I was cycling here it was drought and that was really really
difficult for people. Having just a small farm and some animals and yeah, you produce your own
food and that's really really nice. Most of their own food let's say. The oil and things like that
people they get from outside. Sailor, almost is done with the packing our tent. Yeah, almost.
Next time I can record. Deal. I don't want to mess with sailor you know. It's a very difficult
difficult task but sometimes we mess and we will record that for you all.
99% your butt is towards the camera. Well it's my better side so I need to show that also.
Friend came. You always want more. They're the family we stayed with. Thank you so much for everything.
They offered us to take some of their beans from the farm for the food and we said thanks.
People are just amazing, amazing. Yesterday they also asked what we want to eat.
And today morning we got a tea in the morning. It's like a very nice welcoming feeling.
I don't forget my jacket. I'm very good forgetting things sometimes. Bye-bye bro, bye-bye.
I tell you I absolutely love Africa. I love Africa so much. It's amazing. Full of beautiful people.
Just please don't ask me is it safe or not because I really don't understand why
everyone about Africa often asks me is it safe or not. It's as safe as everywhere else in the world
you know. But the difference is full of amazing people, super friendly people who understand,
who share, who care. It's just a beautiful land. The next stop for us was Narok town
which you can see it here on the map. Hi, how are you? Hi.
These guys are having good time sleeping.
So we came to the small village eating a little bit of breakfast
and the kids are very interested about our bikes so they're just waiting on the other side of the road.
How's it going? Good.
What's the breakfast today? Today is beans and cabbage and potatoes and then we are getting
fresh chapati. This is the way actually you get chapati. Just like this. It's awesome.
How are you? Good bro, good. How are you? We're fine. You're good? Yes. Good.
Some road work here. In the villages in Kenya very often people do need to carry the drinking
water to their houses and very often this happens by bicycle, motorbike or ladies and especially
kids do carry the clean water with their hands or in their head. Also often they use donkeys
for carrying the water and we noticed this donkey's feet didn't look really so normal to us.
Yeah, we are just arriving to Narok and yeah for the last five six kilometers we've been
highway again. This is Narok town ladies and gentlemen. It's Christmas, it's crazy really.
Quite lots of traffic and I think on the road there will be lots of drunken driving.
Now get. Hi Jumbo. If you remember it was like when I was cycling across Africa last time
I met her just over here in Narok and stopped me, invited me to her house and let's introduce
herself. Hi it's Marilyn coming to you from Narok, Kenya. So excited to re-welcome
payment and now sailor. Yay, first time. We stayed in Marilyn's Karibu guest house in Narok.
It was really kind from her to handle all of our mess in her guest house because you know
when we open our panniers everywhere is really a big mess. Over there we had the time to edit
one video for all of you and we published it.
Here you go bro. We just came to this big supermarket to get some porridge and coffee.
Porridge is something actually you don't really find it in the normal shops in the in the villages
in Kenya. So in this big supermarket usually they have sailors inside. Let's see what she will get.
So what did you get? Masala peanuts and oats. Awesome. And washing powder
and olive oil. Washing powder. How big is the washing powder? It was the smallest one.
Okay, I go now. Can you buy the coffee?
Okay, I go. Emergency food.
Again baby food. Baby food, coffee and peanuts. Awesome. These baby foods are such a good
emergency food. They're light and they're very tasty. They're from for 7 to 36 months old and
amazing. Fits me. Yeah, mentally you go to that gap.
Thank you for waiting. Sorry for that. No worries. I didn't have any other options.
We go now towards Mara. Towards Mara. Cannot wait.
We are in the small villages which I don't know the name on the way to Masai Mara.
I think there is a Masai cow market here now. I'm not sure. Let me see.
Yeah, we eat.
In this trip till now usually I'm the one who does the bargaining and then going and dealing
with the prices for the food and for everything. But from now on we have decided it's going to be
half-half. So one day I do, one day Sailor does. Let's see how it will work out for her.
Let's see what are the prices. Yeah, but a good thing is we know the local prices.
Here Sailor went inside the restaurant to ask for the prices first. Sailor is going to start
the bargain because she got the bill. The difference is I counted from the menu and I got 310 shillings.
And we got the price of 500.
And when you go to the touristic places always you just see a traveler price goes up and
and like we just don't accept that. We like to pay local price. I think it's fair to pay
local price and we are all the time on the road with travelers. We cannot afford that
kind of crazy price if somebody comes for a holiday for for 20 days. Sailor comes and
throws money around and it just doesn't work for us. One thing about traveling is this bargaining
sometimes is so annoying.
Some of the travelers from the west they say oh we never got cheated and actually
the thing is they have got cheated but they just don't know it.
So I paid 370. We calculated everything together and we agreed.
Bargaining bargaining bargaining. I'm getting better.
How it feels your first bargaining was really successful? Feels so good not to pay
Muzungu price. Muzungu price means tourist price. Yeah. Let's go. And in front you can see the
Masai market. A lot of people over there. So we want to go to see what is happening.
Yeah and I also need the shoes from the market. I want to have these tire shoes.
The Masai shoes they make it. It's really good because the torn they don't go through to the
sole of the shoes.
Are you ready to leave? Yes I changed the battery of the camera.
Okay let's go.
We are in the Masai market.
It's so confusing. They sell everything. Cows.
Then this gentleman came and spoke with us and I asked where I can find these Masai shoes
and he told me there's another part of the market which is a little bit far
over there I might find my Masai shoes.
The real market is here actually. Yeah if you are ready to go there with your bike.
Let's try it out see how it feels.
Water refilling.
You get your water refilled.
Working? Putting lubrication.
Bearing needs to be changed I think. The bearing? Bearing yeah you need a new bearing.
It needs a new one but I'm gonna use that one for the meantime.
I deliver water. You deliver water. All right good bro good luck.
Cheers what was your name? Ken. Ken okay enjoy Ken.
These markets are super colorful and a lot happening there's lots of life there so it's
really nice to be there but I couldn't find my Masai shoes there and we kept cycling towards
After close to four years of cycling in Africa I feel like there is no limit on what is possible
to carry on top of motorbike and bicycle. This time was a goat. I even have seen two guys,
one cow and one goat on a same motorbike.
Okay take a moment to record the ostrich.
I tried to take a picture and movie from the ostrich but the camera zoom is not enough really.
The iPhone seems like have a better zoom than the camera.
Yeah I need a different lens indeed yeah but lenses are so expensive.
Here Masai peoples they live and they have usually just the animals actually.
They do not farm they just herd animals, goat, sheep and especially cows.
Amazing amazing place it's wild. Just in the left and right side of the road we have seen so much
wild animals. Incredible place. We have around 40 kilometers to Masai Mara, one of the world's
most famous national parks. We just ate our last piece of bread and you have still honey and we have
just a little bit of peanut butter. Damn bad stomach. Today is one of those days I really
just went to the pharmacy, bought some pills. I don't know what why it was but anyway I had a
little bit help. Just here beside the road and let's see how it goes and we have to cycle.
And the kids I love them but sometimes yes I don't have energy to talk to them and
they're all around as you can see. So I just need to keep hydrated and then we can continue. We still
need to cycle a little bit even if he's sick that's awful. I shouldn't do it but I have to do it.
We wait for a while and then you drink that one and then let's see how you feel. Adventure is not
always easy but this is a part of adventure so it's all right. Let's see how it goes.
After a while of cycling I start to feel a little bit better and we asked this
Masai family if we could put our tent in their land and they kindly accept and we camped over
there for that night. Perfect timing. It's raining quite a lot now and we just got only a couple of
water drops on us. Very good timing. Yeah perfect. Sailor is pretty fancy so she likes air mattress
I'm super fancy with these ones. To put air in this air mattress and every day and then in the
morning just take the air off empty it's just for me it's a pain you know. I'm not bothered. The
zed light from Thermarest is really really comfy has been good for me. Maybe when I get old so
then I change it. I'm not old I'm 40 years old young. There's nothing to laugh about.
40 years old young. 40 years young.
Silver fox baby. Silver fox. Yeah you're getting close to it. Good morning
That was loud. One is playing with our flag.
Kenya has at least 42 ethnic groups and Masai is one of the biggest tribes in Kenya.
They live in northern central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. Masai have their own
language which called Ma but nowadays most of them do speak Swahili which is the official language
of Kenya and English except some of the elders who live in rural areas. For Masai's their cattle
is very very important they eat mainly the meat of the cow they drink the milk also in some
occasions they make a food with the blood. The breakfast is just a pure avocado. Yesterday I
had a bad stomach and today sailor has a bad stomach. I don't know I just feel that I need to
Avocado is good. I like it. So the guys here they told us over there there's these lions and then the
hyenas and everything lives over there across the river and now we go to check out the river
after we pack the tent. Here we had a talk with this Masai gentleman from the family we stayed
Let's listen to see what he says. Tell us again when the elephants they come
How many cows you have here?
600 to 500. That's a lot. That's a lot of cows bro. And sheep also.
Is it the same amount?
This amount of cows are only for one family or for how many family?
Yeah for one family.
How many members there is in family? Around 10. So for 10 people they have like around
500 to 600 cows. Man that's amazing. And do you have any problem with the
cows and like lions or the hyenas? Not so much.
Okay so the lions they don't come to the cows?
Maybe less and less after there will be Santa Cebras migrate again to the park. Near the park
then they will be a bit hungry. Yeah for the alternative food. But it's very very very
interesting when you sleep here and you hear the lions over there roaring that's quite a
quite unique experience for us but you hear it every night yeah the lions
across the river okay okay have you seen them while taking the cows have you seen the lions huh
you passed them past the line during the data yeah okay no problem
no they don't hunt during the day yeah okay
like if the cows you pass the lions
see hold on don't eat anyone that's amazing thank you that explains a lot because
the lions especially when we are cycling like if we go with the bicycles the lions will eat us
that's not like that yeah okay
we came to the other side of the river as you can see
we don't see any lions and hyenas but we could hear them all the night from this area and also
hyenas in the morning yeah it's amazingly beautiful beautiful bush just so stunning
it's incredible look the moss eyes they just live over there and the lions they're just around here
it's incredible actually i want to point out here if you come to the bush in africa and you see a
lot of broken trees down or big branches broken that means there's elephants are around so here
you can see look these these three those three these are a sign of elephants elephants they do
that good good look we were thinking these are these are the job of elephants isn't it
elephants they break these right yeah good i know i know when was the last time you see
elephants over here
thank you so much for your time thank you and thanks for all the information thank you bye bye
bye bye it's a beautiful place to live really isn't it it's amazing you know you are close to
in mara we stayed with the drunken elephant campsite they were really great guys and
we had a few days of rest over there we spent the christmas there and we had a great great food i
tell you that absolutely my favorite food i love it two years ago also i had a great time here with
drunken elephants and we went to mara and these guys are absolutely amazing and again this year
love it and now it's sailor yeah we need to cycle a lot after this
then we went to the game ride inside the masai mara national park this was something i have
done it when i was cycling solo across east africa but for sailor was the first time
and it was really really a fantastic experience
masai mara is such a unique place the ecosystem over there is incredible and
the bush is in a way you can really see far and it's just beautiful beautiful place and
we really had a great day but i tell you that sitting all the day on those land cruisers
it's quite a hard job actually so when we had a break we had to do some push-ups
one person needs to repeat you didn't do anything man and here i'm having some conversation
with our masai guide they have a really beautiful
masai knife so i was asking some questions about that knife from him
beautiful and uh do they make this one in kenya yeah here
and what is this from which leather is it cow cow tail
here interesting what's the use of this for what use
for cutting meat yeah i guess for meat and protection
beautiful thank you thank you bro then we said bye to the drunken elephant crew
in mara and we start to cycle towards naivasha as you can see in the map this time we had to
take the highway because we wanted to cycle as fast as possible to naivasha we had a quite
less time left and we wanted to go up north still towards laikipia region
you might ask why we had to go back towards naivasha well the reason was because i forgot
our scuba washing bag over there in naivasha so we had to go back and pick that one up
but that didn't mess up our plans so much because we were going to jump on odessa bikepacking route
of kenya again took some off-road route and cycled towards eburu forest after maybe two kilometers
peyman got hungry because we didn't eat so much in the morning and we found very nice place it's
a very small place hi so peyman started to to make some food he got the stones from inside
and then we got noodles not so fresh but that's fine it keeps us going and then we have a lot
a lot of water life is good sometimes i wonder if one day in finland do the same things in the
restaurant and shop as we do in africa and see how the restaurant owners and shop owners would react
that would be quite actually funny movie what do you think very good i don't know what i thank you
for everything we keep going cycling thanks for renting the the box and everything yeah
thank you bye-bye bye-bye amazing people on the way to eburu forest we passed by this village
and it was quite interesting there was steam coming out of the ground and they were making
a water out of this steam that was really really nice and i haven't seen anywhere else in the world
such a thing we had to pay insurance fee for cycling inside this eburu national park and
we paid it then we cycled it it was quite beautiful the forest was really really nice
all good yeah but i was like uh trying to avoid that one
no broken place super beautiful place it's like a jungle and there's no one else
you can just hear the sound of the forest like a birds that place was full of hyenas
footprint did you see that oh yeah i saw but coming down from the forest that was amazing
with our bikes we were jumping and it was so much fun that was really really a
really really a great day actually i need to admit that
then we continued cycling towards northern part of kenya
like ipia super beautiful let's go before i move here
but on the way we seen one of the most unique the most like a craziest shop
we ever have been i stopped talking now let's get into this shop together now
here's the shop and let's get in let's go let's greet the chicken first
that's why they came from inside that's super nice this is really cool thank you
i've never seen like this fresh eggs
that's amazing huh fresh eggs straight away from the shell
two hungry ladies eating watermelon then we cycled all the way to sunday farm sunday farm
is one of my favorite place in in whole africa actually i stayed there when i was cycling solo
in east africa and people over there they are so amazing and whole environment and the farm
it's just incredible and petra and all the all the ladies they they really become like a
great friend and a family member to me so i was very excited to introduce them to sailor also
and we stayed few days in sunday and after that we came back to finland
also we want to thank zeitouni hotel in elementaita they let us to stay there for
