Hello everyone!
Today we will talk about the plural in German.
Christina from Italy has requested this topic.
She always watches my videos with her family.
So, thank you Christina for your support on Patreon.
So, are you ready for the plural?
We will look at the plural of masculine, feminine and neuter nouns.
First of all, the plural.
masculine nouns
often end with e
sometimes with umlaut
and that's about 90% of the masculine nouns
So, even if you don't remember anything from this video, try to remember this.
That most masculine nouns, and by the way also neuter nouns, end with e in the plural.
And the article for the plural is always die.
The article for the plural in German is always die.
Always, always, always, always, always die.
So, examples.
der Freund
die Freunde
I have many friends.
der Ball
die Bälle
Just imagine another ball here.
die Bälle
der Tisch
die Tische
Einfach, oder? Easy.
Was ist der Plural von Stuhl?
What is the plural of chair?
So, actually, there you have an umlaut, ja?
Der Plural ist die Stühle.
So, usually, if you have a, o, or u, a, o, oder u, then you get a little umlaut in there.
Like here, Ball und Bälle.
Cool.
So, das nächste.
Männliche Nomen mit der Endung e-end-ist-end-on.
Diese enden oft mit n oder en.
N, for example, der Junge.
This actually totally makes sense, because der Junge already has an e at the end.
Da ist schon ein e.
So, the first rule doesn't apply.
So, you just add an n.
die Jungen, the boys
der Deutsche, die Deutschen
oder zum Beispiel der Student mit e-n-t und die Studenten
oder der Tourist und die Touristen
oder die Person und die Personen
I forgot the die here, sorry.
Ich habe das die vergessen.
Die Person und die Personen
So, und das letzte, the last one.
Männliche unsächliche Nomen.
The last rule also applies for the neuter nouns.
mit der Endung l, n oder r.
Das ist ganz einfach.
That's very easy, that rule.
Die haben keine Pluralendung.
They don't have any plural ending.
Aber manchmal einen Umlaut.
But sometimes, manchmal mit Umlaut.
So, zum Beispiel, der Lehrer ist Singular.
Und die Lehrer ist Plural.
Oder der Apfel ist Singular.
Die Äpfel ist Plural.
So, Frage.
Ich habe eine Frage an dich.
I have a question for you.
Was ist der Plural von Löffel?
Der Löffel.
Der Plural?
Die Löffel ist das gleiche.
It's the same.
Oder, was ist der Plural von das Messer?
It ends with er.
Nein, es endet mit er.
Was ist der Plural?
Die Messer.
Und das letzte, the last one.
Was ist der Plural von die Gabel?
It's not die Gabel.
For the feminine nouns, this rule doesn't apply.
We would say die Gabeln with an n at the end.
Die Gabeln.
If a feminine noun, ein weibliches Noun, Nomen, endet mit l,
dann machst du ein n hinten dran.
Then you add an e at the end.
Okay?
Gut.
So, just remember.
For männliche Nomen, male nouns, masculine nouns,
usually they just add an e.
Normalerweise enden sie mit e.
Das sind 90%.
It's really 90%.
If they have one of these endings, then they end with n or en.
And if they end with l, n or er,
dann keine Änderung.
No change.
Super.
So, der Plural weibliche Nomen, feminine nouns,
die enden oft mit en oder mit n.
Ungefähr 90%.
About 90% of feminine nouns end with these endings.
So, zum Beispiel.
Die Frau.
The woman.
Die Frauen.
Oder die Freundschaft.
Maybe you remember from my other video.
Schaft.
If you have this ending, it's always feminine.
Das Nomen ist immer weiblich.
So, und der Plural ist die Freundschaften.
Einfach, oder?
So, and for example here, you already have an e.
Die Banane.
In the singular.
Und da ist schon ein e.
There is already an e, so you just have to add an n.
If there is already an e, then you don't add en,
you just add n.
Die Bananen.
Oder die Frage.
The question.
Die Fragen.
Ich habe viele Fragen.
I have many questions.
Oder ich habe eine Frage.
I have one question.
Und die Nation.
Die Nationen.
Zum Beispiel.
Die Tasche.
The bag.
Was ist der Plural?
What is the plural?
Die Taschen.
Ganz einfach.
Oder hier.
Die Pflanze.
Die Pflanze, the plant.
Und was ist der Plural?
Die Pflanzen.
Ganz einfach.
Very easy.
But one little exception.
If you have die Lehrerin.
Die Lehrerin.
Female professions, for example.
Then you add nen.
Die Lehrerinnen.
nen.
Zwei n.
Die Amerikanerin und die Amerikanerinnen.
This is a little exception.
Eine kleine Ausnahme.
For female people, female persons or female professions.
Und das nächste.
Enden manchmal mit e und umlaut.
So some female nouns.
But it's not that many.
End with i and umlaut.
Und die sind oft einsilbig.
Siehst du hier?
Oft einsilbige weibliche Nomen.
So this means often they only have one syllable.
So, zum Beispiel.
Die Hand.
Das ist meine Hand.
Und das sind meine Hände.
Die Hände.
Oder die Stadt.
The city.
Die Städte.
Ist der Plural.
Oder die Maus.
The mouse.
Und die Mäuse.
Okay.
Das ist alles für weibliche Nomen.
That's all for feminine nouns.
So just remember.
Usually you add an n or an en.
Der Plural sächliche Nomen.
Enden oft mit e.
They often end with e.
Ungefähr 75%.
About 75% end with e.
Just like the masculine nouns.
So, neuter nouns and masculine nouns.
Most of them, they really end with e.
Sie enden mit e.
So, Beispiele.
Das Bein.
The leg.
Die Beine.
Oder, das kennst du schon.
You already know this.
Das Jahr.
Die Jahre.
The year.
Okay.
And you see, you just add an e.
Einfach.
So, enden manchmal mit er.
This is a little exception.
And sometimes they also have an umlaut here.
Manchmal mit umlaut.
Zum Beispiel.
Das Kind.
The kid.
Und die Kinder.
The kids.
Oder das Buch.
The book.
Die Bücher.
So here you have an umlaut.
Und hörst du das?
Do you hear this?
Bücher.
Here it's softer.
Und Buch.
Stronger.
Okay?
So, und keine Endung bei chen und leim.
There is no ending for chen or leim.
It just stays the same.
Das Mädchen.
The girl.
Und die Mädchen.
Die Mädchen.
The girls over there.
Die Mädchen dort drüben.
The girls.
Und das Brötchen.
Das ist ein Brötchen.
Kennst du das?
Das Brötchen.
Zum Frühstück.
For breakfast.
Und Plural ist die Brötchen.
So, der Plural andere.
Wörter mit den Endungen a, i, o, u und y.
Y.
Und Abkürzungen.
Abkürzungen.
This means abbreviations.
They end oft with an s.
Enden oft mit s.
Beispiele.
Die Party.
Mit y, nicht?
With y.
Und die Partys.
Oder das Auto.
Die Autos.
Oder die Kamera.
Die Kameras.
Okay.
Und dann Abbreviations.
Abkürzungen.
Die DVD.
DVD.
Und Plural ist die DVDs.
Ich habe viele DVDs.
I have many DVDs.
Actually not, but still.
Und der LKW is a big truck.
Das ist ein LKW.
Und Plural ist die LKWs.
LKWs.
Gut.
Und das Letzte.
Ausländische Wörter mit den Endungen um a, o, i, o.
You don't have to remember this.
This is something which some Germans don't even know.
So, don't worry.
Don't focus on this one too much, but I just want to tell you.
Das sind oft lateinische Wörter.
They are often Latin words.
Zum Beispiel.
Also, die enden oft mit en.
Zum Beispiel.
Das Thema.
Die Themen.
Das Thema is the topic.
Und die Themen, the topics.
Oder das Museum.
Und der Plural ist die Museen.
Und jetzt möchte ich euch noch zeigen, wie du im Wörterbuch den Plural findest.
Und dann machen wir eine Übung.
So, first I want to show you how to find the plural in the dictionary.
Im Wörterbuch.
Und dann machen wir eine Übung.
Then we do an exercise.
Hier siehst du ein Online-Wörterbuch.
Here you see an online dictionary.
Und das heißt dikt.cc
Und zum Beispiel.
Du möchtest wissen, was ist der Plural von Kind?
What is the plural of Kind?
Und du schaust hier Kind.
Hier ist Englisch.
Hier ist Deutsch.
Und Deutsch siehst du das Kind.
Und das ist der Plural.
Die Kinder.
So, es ist nicht so schwer.
It's just behind the noun.
And here is also a little explanation.
Article singular, article plural.
Und dann zum Beispiel.
Stuhl.
Der Stuhl.
As I told you, most masculine nouns, they end with an E.
Die meisten enden mit einem E.
Und du siehst hier Stuhl.
Der Stuhl.
Die Stühle.
So, it ends with an E and you have to add an umlaut.
Manchmal ist da ein umlaut.
Die Stühle.
Chair.
It means chair.
You know, Stuhl also means something else.
You know what I mean.
Gut.
Dankeschön.
Übung.
Was ist der Plural?
What is the plural?
Der Junge.
Was ist der Plural?
So, you can remember for most of the nouns which end with E,
you just add an N in the plural.
Die Jungen.
Das Ei.
Das ist eine Ausnahme.
This is a little exception.
So, you have die Eier.
Das Auto.
Die Autos.
Der Apfel.
Die Äpfel.
So, here you just add an umlaut.
You remember, if it ends with EL, it's just the same word.
And sometimes there is an umlaut.
So, und die Katze.
Die Katzen.
Und die Hausaufgabe ist das.
Das ist deine Hausaufgabe.
This is your homework.
