It's FYF Sportsman, it's Lamont Wheat back.
Back with another podcast video.
There you go, I'm on a hot streak right now, man.
We gotta continue dropping all of these bangers
on a daily basis.
More time on my hands, my time is cleared up.
Live debates have been going crazy.
You guys have been showing up big time,
a lot of support, and I appreciate it.
And so I have no other choice.
I gotta continue giving you guys this news.
And again, we've been hitting you up
with more podcast videos.
And again, a lot of the topics that we touch on,
as you see from the title of the video today,
is the strike up debate.
That's the name of this channel, FYF Debates.
I'm not here to agree with everything that I hear,
or even that I believe myself.
You know, we have to reanalyze everything,
you know, especially when we're in the game of basketball,
when we're dealing with players like Will Chamberlain,
who played outside of an area
that most of us did not even watch ourselves.
So we have to go back and hear everybody's piece.
And I came across this video.
I haven't heard it myself,
but we definitely need to check this video out.
Before we get started,
make sure you guys like, comment, and subscribe.
Hit the notification bell to the video
if you have not done so already.
Make sure you hit that notification bell.
I've had a lot of people ask me,
when am I going live?
And you guys, you gotta start listening in the video.
When we go live, Monday through Friday,
we're gonna be going live, 5 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
I say it in every video, all right?
You don't even need to know that.
All you have to do is hit the notification bell.
When you subscribe, hit the subscribe button,
hit the notification bell next to it,
and just allow that notification
to pop up whenever I go live.
I usually send out that notification
about an hour before the video goes live.
So again, I shouldn't still hear people saying,
when are we going live?
And you wanna debate me.
If you wanna debate me, you know when and where to show up.
Told you, I'm not giving out any more free smoke.
The days of going over to other people's platforms,
giving out free lessons is over with.
If you guys got anything you wanna say to me,
you know where you gotta show up to, all right?
To get that easy smoke, all right?
But today, we're talking about Will Chamberlain.
Will Chamberlain is one of the greats.
He's one of the greats of all time.
And I guess in this video,
and this is not a video that I've seen yet.
I'm curious to hear it myself.
We're gonna go ahead and transition over there.
In this video, Will Chamberlain is explaining
why he feels he's better than Michael Jordan.
So, as we do with every video that we watch,
we play it, we stop it, we talk about it, we discuss it.
And then at the end of the day,
you guys can come to your own conclusion.
But I think a guy like Will Chamberlain,
he's done enough in his career
where he can actually make this statement.
And I'm not even particularly sure
when this actual statement was made.
Maybe we'll find out during the video.
But he has a bone to pick.
He has a bone to pick with Michael Jordan
being labeled the GOAT.
As you guys know, we talked about it in our live debate.
Jordan was labeled the GOAT early on in his career
while he was still playing.
There were a lot of NBA players
that didn't like that notion.
A lot of NBA players felt that you allow a player
to finish his career before we label him the GOAT.
And many of his critics will say that
the labeling of Michael Jordan as the GOAT so soon
was media-driven, was marketing-driven, was money-driven.
And there are a lot of facts to back that up.
But you know what?
We're gonna go ahead and get straight to the video.
I really wanna hear what Will Chamberlain has to say
when he's trying to explain why he's better
than Michael Jordan.
So let's go ahead and get to the video.
He asked Michael Jordan a few months ago.
He said, Michael, now don't be shy
and don't be this and don't be that.
Are you the best basketball player to ever play?
And Michael said, yes, I am.
Michael Jordan and you, for a while, went back and forth.
He's at a different level of celebrity, isn't he?
Only because of the different kinds of media exposure
that he's been given.
If the two of you were in a room together,
where do you think your conversation would focus?
The two of you.
Well, you know, first, you know,
we're at the NBA's all-time team celebration,
Cleveland, 1997.
And over in the corner is Wilton and Michael Jordan.
And they're sitting at a table,
arguing vociferously as to who the greatest player
of all time was.
And they're back and forth.
It's just intense as can be.
Hey, does it steam you that Michael Jordan
gets paid so much, and you were 10 times the player he is,
and you never got that kind of big money?
Do you ever say to yourself, am I better than,
do you consider yourself-
Yeah, is he better than you were?
It bothers you when people talk about him
as being the greatest player of all time.
Well, it bothers me because we all have our opinions.
And I don't think that, you know,
commensurate with what he's doing, what he's done,
and how the game is going today,
that he's better than a number of people.
I contend Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player
who ever lived.
I would put you number two,
only because you only won two championships.
Now people are gonna say, well, you know what?
He had a lot of stats and this and that.
You won two world championships, okay?
I have a friend of mine who I talk to about once a week.
You know what he says about Michael's four championships?
He doesn't say anything about it.
Because why?
Because he has 11.
He has 11.
Bill Russell.
I don't think, you know, you can predict-
I just wanted to pause it right there, man,
because a lot of the sentiments that we hear right there,
a lot of sentiments that we hear right there
are the same things that we hear coming up in the debates.
You know, as you guys heard,
the host that was talking to Will Chamberlain,
the host that was talking to Will Chamberlain said,
you only have two championships.
And again, when you focus your argument
entirely off championships,
what you do is you open the door for a rebuttal
the same way Will Chamberlain just rebuttal.
And his rebuttal revolved around Bill Russell.
So again, if your argument's gonna be around championships
primarily, or at least if that's the emphasizing factor
that puts Jordan as the GOAT,
then when you talk about Bill Russell,
the emphasizing factor in that conversation
is 11 championships, which is seven more than Jordan had,
should elevate him over Jordan.
Why do we not elevate Bill Russell over Jordan
solely because of his championships?
Why does the criteria change
when we're talking about Bill Russell?
And I have this argument with guys all the time.
When we switch areas,
when we talk about different players,
all right, the elements that you use
to make your case as Jordan for the GOAT,
it changes from player to player, from argument to argument.
I wish that people would keep a consistent argument.
That way situations like this won't arise.
And if you use the continuously weak argument
of just championships alone,
then people can easily come back
and rebuttal you with what Wilt Chamberlain said.
But I'm really liking this video.
I like the direction that it's going.
And again, this is just here to debate.
This is not saying either way.
I've already stated to you guys in the lives who my GOAT is,
but Wilt Chamberlain is making this case right here.
Let's get back to the video.
How great a guy really is,
or because he has championships.
There's a lot of guys on those championship teams
who've done nothing.
The greatest scorer of all time?
Not even, would you even give him that?
Well, you know, you see what people don't remember
was that my first seven years I scored a lot of points.
Then I stopped scoring on my own volition.
I tried to do other things.
I was asked to do other things and that's what I did.
So if I had continued to score,
I would probably be averaging 40 points
for my whole lifetime.
Does that make me the best scorer?
I really don't know.
But one thing I do know,
that all the years while I was usually scoring
all those points,
I was leading the league in percentile shooting.
And that's also important
because if you take all the shots,
then you should be making the highest percentage.
So when they compare me with Michael,
Michael's averaging 31 points for his lifetime.
I average about 30 points for a lifetime.
But I stopped scoring.
I know that basketball is a team game.
Right.
And you've already made Michael number one.
But if you had to have Will against Michael,
my prime and his prime,
how much money would you be willing to bet?
Wow.
He's six foot seven and he's like 197 pounds.
Coming into what we call our domain,
the pyramid for us big guys,
would not have been very wise of Michael,
you know, if he was playing during our time.
So we would say,
Michael, you know,
as long as you do all those fancy things
outside of where we are,
that's fine.
You think you could have beaten Michael in your prime?
He would take you outside.
He shoots on the three point arc.
Then you try to come out and get him.
I run a hundred, nine, five.
A hundred meters around 10, 10, two.
And then in that area.
52 vertical.
A 50 inch vertical jump.
By the way, what's,
what's Michael Jordan's vertical jump?
Do we know?
I don't think it's quite that high.
Not as high.
Bench press almost 600 pounds.
Hey man.
Yeah, Will Chamberlain is making a very strong case.
And I like how the guy came back and said,
what are you going to do
if Michael Jordan takes you on the perimeter?
And he comes back, said,
you know what?
I was just as fast.
Just as quick.
Just as strong.
And the numbers prove it.
I know I was listening to two rocks for two V's video
one day and he said that
Will Chamberlain could bench press 600 pounds.
I did not believe him.
I did my research and I was surprised.
I said, this man could bench press 600 pounds.
I've never seen a human who could bench press 60, 600 pounds
and then turn around and have a 50 inch vertical.
That's insane athleticism right there.
So when you're talking about one of the least
and one of the most athletic players in NBA history,
Will Chamberlain has probably got to be one or two
on that list just based on just some of the numbers alone.
The vertical jump, the speed for the 100.
You know, he wasn't your typical everyday seven foot player.
I mean, and he's just giving you the numbers right there.
I like everything that he's saying.
And again, this is how NBA players are.
You're supposed to have that type of confidence and swagger
especially when you're a player like Will Chamberlain.
And for people like me who did not see this man play
in his prime, I didn't see him play in his prime.
I have to go off old videos.
And now some of those things are now coming together.
This is why older fans think so highly
of a guy like Will Chamberlain.
Let's go ahead and get back to the video though.
Michael would probably be going-
Wait a minute, 600 pounds?
600 pounds.
You think he'd have been crushed is what you're saying?
I don't think, I know he'd have been crushed.
So it wouldn't have been good for Michael.
I came into the NBA and destroyed it.
My tools were so dominant that they frightened people.
You were Jordan before Jordan.
Yeah, well, you know, I don't even have to say
Jordan before Jordan because Jordan, you know,
Jordan's come behind a whole lot of us
as far as I'm concerned.
Will, who always has the last word in everything.
Will, look down at Michael and say,
Michael, until you are so great
that they start changing the game to stop your greatness,
then I don't think you have a right to make that accolades
in that particular way.
Hey man, you know what, you know,
before we really get into this, man,
I really want to go back early on into the video.
I want to go early into the video where
Will Chamberlain talked about how Jordan did say
he was the best player of all time while he was playing.
And there are a lot of people who criticize LeBron James
for saying or claiming himself to be the best player
all time while he's still playing.
And Will Chamberlain says out of his own mouth,
I just wanted to reiterate that point right there.
I want, I want, I'm going to go back in this video.
I'm going to, so we're going to go back
to that point right there
because Will even reiterated that point.
I think that's another false premise
that Jordan fans like to use,
especially against a guy like LeBron James,
who whenever you're playing
and you're the best player of your generation,
you're supposed to have that confidence.
The only way you get that good
is if you have that type of confidence.
I just want to get back to that part of the video.
I want to play it one more time for you guys.
He asked Michael Jordan a few months ago,
he said, Michael, now don't be, you know,
shy and don't be this and don't be that.
Are you the best basketball player to ever play?
And Michael said, yes, I am.
Michael Jordan and you for a while.
Michael Jordan was asked,
are you the best basketball player of all time?
And Michael Jordan stated, yes, yes, I am.
And this is while they were, while he was still playing.
And there we go.
Again, this is why you cannot,
when you're debating the greatness of players,
this is why you cannot get into petty beefs,
petty, petty, petty arguments.
You got to come with stronger debates
than you don't like the fact
that LeBron James claimed himself to be the GOAT.
Because as you can see,
Wilt Chamberlain has that same type of swagger,
that same type of confidence.
Regardless of what we may think as fans,
Wilt Chamberlain really, really deep down inside believes
that he is the greatest player all time.
Now, he has a strong case.
I mean, outside of the argument
that we heard this host use,
which he used, well, you only have two championships,
Jordan, and Jordan has more.
We know ultimately by the time Jordan's career ended,
Jordan has six.
That's not a very strong,
that's not necessarily a very strong argument,
primarily because people can always come back to the fact
that Bill Russell had 11.
There are other players who have more championships
than Michael Jordan.
So championships alone don't necessarily make you
the greatest player all time.
I think that's what he was trying to emphasize right there.
And Wilt Chamberlain made some really,
really good points in it.
You know, when he talks about how they changed the game,
they changed the game for him.
The rules of the game were changed.
The lane lines and the paint were widened.
The free throw line was pushed back due to Wilt Chamberlain
because there was one point in time
in Wilt Chamberlain's career,
instead of just shooting the free throw,
he would just jump and dunk the ball from the free throw line.
All right, so I mean,
those are major and impactful rule changes
where you cannot dunk the ball from the free throw line.
This man was that athletic,
he could just jump and dunk the ball from the free throw line,
which again, that's tough for any seven footer to do,
even if you are athletic.
So again, man, I just like to bring this,
I like to bring these videos from a more unique approach.
I like to hear every player out,
especially when we're talking about
one of the greatest players of all time.
Wilt Chamberlain was arguably
the greatest player of that era.
I want you guys to let me know
what you think about this particular video, man.
Because again, Wilt Chamberlain's,
you know, Wilt Chamberlain's making a strong case
for himself.
Now, is he right?
Again, recency bias feels, it affects us all.
Jordan was more recent than Wilt.
I see more footage of Jordan than I do Wilt.
We just saw the last dance documentary of Michael Jordan.
So all of those highlights and all of those games
and all those finals games, now they're fresh in our minds.
I don't have that.
I don't get that with Wilt Chamberlain
because those highlights aren't continuously thrown
in our face.
All right, even when I browse through YouTube,
it's tough to find really good highlight compilations
of Wilt Chamberlain.
And, you know, 20, 30, 40 years from now,
the same things are gonna affect Michael Jordan.
When this footage of Michael Jordan,
when the circulation of this footage slows down,
or let's say for whatever reason,
the Jordan brand, the shoe company, it fades away.
And other shoe companies take over.
These things like this will remove the greatness
of Michael Jordan from the back of our minds.
And when that happens,
are we gonna be good enough students of the game
to be able to break his game down to other people,
to be able to keep that footage alive and say,
this is what made Jordan great, X, Y, and Z.
And because he was great at X, Y, and Z,
it led to him winning six championships
and helping to elevate that Chicago Bulls team.
You know, are we gonna get away from just yelling out,
oh, Jordan was 6-0 and LeBron was 4-6
and Wilt Chamberlain was 2-4?
Are we gonna get away from those weak arguments?
Are we gonna actually strengthen our debates?
Are we gonna do our research?
You know, as we always say, for research purposes only,
are we gonna become better students at a game?
That's one of the things I appreciate
about everybody who comes into our live debates
here at FYF Sportsman.
You know, I know we had a guy on our panel yesterday
who said, you know, that our panel seemed a bit biased.
Yeah, we have, our panel is full of fans.
You know, if you're fans of any particular player,
I'm fine with that.
But one thing I won't take away from our panel
is that as silly as they can be, as we can joke sometimes,
these guys all know basketball in their own right,
from young to old.
And I respect everyone's approach, everyone's opinion.
And because we all respect our opinion,
it just creates for a great basketball talk.
So again, you guys chime in, hit us up in the comments.
All right, if it's a live chat going on right now,
hit us up in the live chat.
Let us know what you think about this right here,
because it gets deep.
And we're here to debate.
We may be talking about this later tonight.
Why is Wilt Chamberlain forgotten?
Why is he the forgotten great?
Why is his greatness?
Why is his greatness kind of faded away?
And how has Jordan been able to maintain
that level of greatness?
Has it been the shoes?
Has it been multiple documentaries
that just continuously get released
to keep them fresh in our minds?
I think that these players understand that.
And when those highlights start to fade away,
so does your greatness.
But he's FYL Sportsman, but another great video, man.
Wilt Chamberlain, man.
He was a beast.
I'm gonna have to do my homework on Wilt Chamberlain.
I may have to redo my top 10 list
if I find some new information.
