Costa Rica, the Switzerland of Central America.
The best tap water since Canada.
It's going wild, I think he's taunting me.
Hey, get out of here, all of you!
Just past the border I met Manolo, who has been cycling from Vancouver.
We rode together to the first town in search of beer and free camping.
And just like that, gone were the shacks and horses of Nicaragua
and replaced with the sturdy houses and clean streets of Costa Rica.
Luckily, we managed to avoid the hot seaside evenings,
but I can't say the same for the rampaging kids.
Manolo continued straight to Panama and fought with the trucks on the Pan-American highway,
while he went on to circle an old volcano and fought with flat tires and the wind.
What are you doing?
You're so cute.
Hey, buddy.
The white one is crazy.
They're just watching me, trying to make contact with the monkeys.
Let's see.
He's gonna fall.
Hey, dude.
He's hanging by his tail.
Oh my god.
Hey, buddy.
What are you doing?
He's going wild.
I think he's taunting me.
Ah, yeah?
You wanna fight?
Bring it on.
Whoa.
Super stoked about water here.
Wherever I go, and in Nicaragua too, people just give me water from the tap.
And the one I had here in Costa Rica has been the best tap water since Canada.
And USA too.
Out of this blue Sunday dream.
Come to me when you smoke your mouth.
Rain drops fall on this old town.
It's been me and you.
You've been falling right home.
Well, I lied to you, and I lied to punk.
See, I don't know any name.
If this is all in our mind, this is all just in our minds.
Honey, would you mind getting out of mine?
This is all just in our head.
Now I'm screaming red, watching the leaves fall down, laugh at us instead.
You.
Yeah, you.
Uh-huh.
Gonna have a problem here?
Hey, beauty.
Hi.
Okay, so I don't know these cows, but they're gathering up right where I am.
What do you want, Bessie?
There's like one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, like 20 cows.
And those two are fighting, but they're all...
Why are you near me?
Hey, get out of here.
All of you.
This all.
Hey, move it.
Nothing to see here.
Go away.
I'm just being molested by cows now.
Strawberry milkshake.
There's vanilla yogurt.
No, they're too quick.
Hello, how are you?
Why are you running away?
Whoa.
Oh, I thought this would be funny.
You're just sitting there.
Man, you're so skinny.
Hi, cupcake.
Good morning.
How are you doing, the best?
Sprinklers.
So refreshing.
The Nicoya was beautiful, but it was way too hot.
The days were spent up and down steep, dusty roads and fixing flat tires.
But if anything, I could learn from the dogs here.
And relax a little more.
This is how hot it is right now.
Hey, buddy.
Pero.
He's like, I'm done.
I'm done being a dog.
Oh, man.
And he or she peed on it.
Right here.
Disgusting.
Hey, don't pee on my bike.
Don't you dare.
Now the cat is attacking my tent.
Don't.
Dude.
Come on.
Absolute.
My favorite, favorite road.
Mountain plain.
Full of pain.
How I ache to be at home.
Prairie skies.
I wonder why I left you so all alone.
One more ride.
Just one more ride.
And I will rest my hide.
Frankly, dear.
When you're not here, I'm alone.
Just like a long, old, old pond.
I am lost in thought.
In the field of sun and seeking something I should not.
When the rodeo's done on Monday morning, I'll ride home with you.
In the meantime, I'll be missing you.
Follow my dream.
Till it seemed that I'd rather be at home.
I did it right.
I did it wrong.
But it took too goddamn long.
One more ride.
Just one more ride.
And I will be by your side.
Frankly, dear.
When you're not here, I'm alone.
Just like a long, old, old pond.
I am lost in thought.
In the field of sun and seeking something I should not.
When the rodeo's done on Monday morning, I'll ride home with you.
In the meantime, I'll be missing you.
I've hung on way too long.
I've been thrown in broken rooms.
I may not win.
And again, I finally found the strength to lose.
One more ride.
Just one more ride.
And I will be satisfied.
Frankly, dear.
When I'm not here, I'm at home.
Just like a long, old, old pond.
I am lost in thought.
In the field of sun and seeking something I should not.
When the rodeo's done on Monday morning, I'll ride home with you.
In the meantime, I'll be missing you.
Oh, in the meantime, I'll be missing you.
There is this two-meter horse and they're feeding him beer.
That's why she's so big.
Costa Rica has 27 national parks.
But sadly, tourists get charged 10 to 15 times more.
Ending with prices from 15 to 50 dollars.
Visiting any was not an option.
But when I went near Vulcan Torrialba, it was closed due to activity.
And now the vegetation surrounding it had died.
Park rangers were stationed to make sure that nobody goes up.
And that was just too much to handle.
I just made it past the gate.
There was nobody guarding it, so that was good.
And, uh, looks, uh, it's a go for the volcano.
I'm grateful when I wake.
Start breathing in the day.
Holding faith to the great design.
This rolling stone will find its way.
And these California crimes have gone and had their day.
That memory won't betray.
As we learn to walk a different line.
This winding road will take me there.
I'm sure as I could be.
My trials will be fair.
As long as I'm aware.
And I will end up where I'm meant to be.
But in a river of silence, I sit down in Maggie's chair.
I say I met him in Ireland, but I ain't no money no more.
When still in a violence, I sit down in Maggie's chair.
And I wait for these songs to appear.
And tell me something that I'd really like to hear.
And any breath will always break.
And if I'm so inclined, then I can take this ache.
Turn this water into wine.
And be grateful for the passing time.
I was now following part of a popular mountain bike route.
But I didn't have the courage to drop down to the hot ocean to finish it.
The locals found my bike to be too heavy and offered to drill some holes.
Yes, it's here.
I don't know.
Yes, it's here.
Yes, go down.
Because it's very steep.
Now go down.
Nice to meet you.
I'll go with you.
Welcome.
I think it's worth it.
Totally worth it doing these crazy roads.
Because you get to meet so many amazing people.
This is like vertical, man.
Vertical.
They're sliding.
Hello.
Well, I'll make it up this hill.
I'll make it up the mountain.
I'm just in a ditch here.
I think that's probably one of the better places to go.
Sadly, the small roads ended.
And all that was left was the highway.
Although there was more to see,
Costa Rica was too expensive to hang around.
I call this the negotiator.
With it, I negotiate road space
with trucks and buses
and other large vehicles
like this one.
And yeah,
I went on the big highway
for two minutes,
for five minutes
and it was enough for me to see
that I'm not going to bike there.
It's too much traffic, too many trucks.
And I found this
hilly road
here in the countryside.
And when the only option is the main road,
you just need to make your own sunshine
and make your own rainbows.
Your own double rainbows.
And if that is not enough,
you can make your own 10 meter
selfie stick.
My last night in Costa Rica,
I spent at somebody's yard
and even had a view
of a tall mountain,
Volcan Baru.
It's in Panama.
And from what I've heard,
you can bike all the way to the top.
This is how hot it is
right now.
Hey buddy!
Pero!
He's like, I'm done.
I'm done being a dog.
