‘Giga (Ital.) or gigue (Gall.) is a nimble English dance set in 3/8, 6/8, or 12/8 time... It is thought to take its name from the Italian word giga, which means a violin or fiddle, but it may well be that this dance got its name from the shaking of the legs, which is probably used by rope dancers more than others, and is called giguer (Gall.). Just as the word giguen is not unknown in German, but is used to describe the unusual way a person walks.’
This entry from Johann Gottfried Walther's ‘Musicalisches Lexicon’ from 1732 shows the great confusion that prevailed for a long time about the origin of the word gigue. Today it is assumed that the gigue originated as a ‘jig’ in the Celtic parts of Great Britain. The jig is still practised in Ireland and Scotland as a lively and exuberant folk dance.
The video was shot on a very grey and rainy day in Switzerland by Simone Schlegel. I hope Wenjing Ma had sunnier weather while editing this video.
