Artist's Biography & Works For Sale Marcel Brunery was the son of François Brunery (1849-1926) and the grandson of Francesco Gonin (1808-1889) both of whom were academic painters. Brunery was born in Paris and followed in his father's footsteps and speciality of 'Cardinal painting', a genre that had become increasingly popular in the late nineteenth century. Also known as 'anti-clerical painting, it generally portrayed clergy, especially Roman Catholic clergy, in highly detailed uncomplimentary contexts.

Brunery exhibited at Société des Artistes Indépendants in 1935 and he gained commercial success in his lifetime. Brunery's paintings can be found in museums including The Warrington Museum & Art Gallery on Bold Street.
