Number one against number two, a star-spangled U.S. Open Championship, and we're ready to
go.
Pete Sampras has the first serve.
He always goes for a huge first serve to start off a match, to declare himself, and that
one had a little bit of heat on it.
One-twenty-two.
Andre Agassi serving.
That'll just about do it for Sampras.
Comes in on the first point, gets passed, probably won't see that for another three
or four sets.
His chipped backhand sometimes sits up.
We talk about how untouchable Sampras would be if he served about 60 percent.
Here, this is off a second serve, and Sampras handles it.
I mean, the quality of Sampras' second serve will be key in this match.
Two aces for Andre Agassi.
Before the match, he said, Tony, I promise to serve at least one into the box.
Forty-thirty.
There's that good, deep return that set this backhand up.
Sampras leaning over to the backhand side, Agassi picking up on it immediately.
He'll pick on that Sampras backhand.
I guess he does so well, he controls the middle of the court.
Sampras pushed way beyond the baseline in a reactive state against all the firepower
from Agassi.
Six-ninety-two.
The players did the right thing here.
Sampras coming in on that soft second serve, and Agassi coming up with a big pass.
It may have been wide, Agassi's got great eyes, but I don't think you can call this
clearly wide.
That thing was struck so hard, snapped right down the line.
It was clearly on the outside of the line, barely in it if it was in.
Meanwhile, Sampras set point for two sets to love lead.
Called out to Semenga.
See, Sampras looking at his arm, he's skinned it a bit.
Impressive shots.
He played a defensive backhand that was excellent.
Once he's on the offensive here, Agassi in desperate trouble.
Third set point for Sampras, trying to get the two sets to love.
Agassi with the break.
Agassi wins the slugfest, forty-fifteen.
It's just amazing that Agassi could break open what seems to be an incredibly hard hitting,
but neutral rally, and bang, all of a sudden he snaps his forehand cross-court winner from
Agassi to end that point.
Agassi leads three games to two feet.
Usually quicker feet.
A little bit sluggish on that shot.
Pulls two sets.
Tracked that beautifully.
It wasn't a bad little volley from Agassi.
He even had a little bit of underspin on it.
But Sampras reacted well to it.
And it set up enough for him to just curl it cross-court.
Stuck there.
This is a good drop shot by Agassi.
Sampras doing well just to get it back.
Nice and deep.
And then the angle.
Another set point for Agassi on Sampras' serve.
Agassi with a nice low return, and this is a shot that's trying to get back around.
Forehand.
Now the crowd and Andre Agassi getting pumped up.
Number two in the world, battling it out here for the U.S. Open title.
Doing enough on his own ground strokes.
Sampras.
And it was a big forehand.
Sampras answers with this backhand reply right up the line.
Perfectly placed.
Bit of a statement from Sampras with his big forehand down the line.
Now this is really his money shot.
He was missing, but he got to this one so well.
Got behind the ball.
Agassi was scrambling this whole point.
A good defensive forehand to get himself back into some sort of position.
Still had to hit that one on the full run.
Sampras serving with new balls.
That should help.
And it did, immediately.
Back at 18.
Heard that Sampras was with the wind also, but this...
Three in a row.
Agassi just says, too good.
He had to smile at that.
His last couple of service games with Pete Sampras is he's just distanced himself from that great return of Agassi by...
This glorious display.
I mean, it's two straight games of almost untouchable serving.
21 aces now.
Seven for him.
Well, that's what he does.
Three straight games, service games from Sampras that are untouchable.
Get that angle if you try.
Long and Sampras breaks.
He'll serve for the match.
He's had nine aces in this set alone.
Aus, the defending champion.
Andre Agassi on this final day of the U.S. Open.
U.S. Open men's singles, Pete Sampras.
