How to Paint in Oil - No Talent Method
可以私訊我,mark.drawmixpaint.com
GenevaFineArt.com
You can't really judge colors until they're surrounded by the relative color.
So once I get all this filled in, it's not going to look too dark.
Everything is going to make sense.
But especially in the beginning, you really have to trust your color checking.
Well, you always have to trust your color checking.
But just notice on the palette, you know,
I think you think that these colors are light.
And when you look at them on the photo there, they look really light.
But then as you put them in, they always look darker.
It's not until we get these very lightest colors in
that the cloth is going to, you know, make any sense.
I'm just filling in.
Notice I'm not doing any blending.
Now, some natural blending happens when you paint.
And I have no problem with letting my, you know, colors run together.
And painting on top of the other color is very normal.
But what you don't want to do is get in there and start playing with it.
And, you know, get second-guessing what you're doing.
Once the canvas is covered with paint,
and I really mean like for the whole cloth,
then and only then am I going to go in and, you know,
play with it or adjust any textures.
So that's as simple as the process is.
Start with something simple.
Don't try to, you know, try to paint a really complicated still life to begin with,
but maybe just a single object, you know,
like an apple sitting on a table or whatever.
And really take your time as you start.
Keep in mind that you're going to be spending a lot more time on your palette,
preparing your brush, deciding what color you need in your brush.
And then when it comes time to painting,
it really doesn't take very long.
It's just a matter of checking where those colors go
and then painting them where you see them.
Simple as that.
But once you have the canvas covered with paint,
you're ready to do any fixing that you need to do.
And the first thing is always going to be to look for those value problems.
Fix those value problems first.
And if there's any detail that needs to go on top,
like and I'm talking about just little detail,
like these little flicks on the silver cup here,
those things go in after you've decided all your values are right.
And I actually don't like to blend and make things all smooth.
You want to keep a little bit of texture on there,
no matter what you're painting.
So you have to be careful not to go too far with it.
It's really a matter of just getting your values right
and making any small adjustments that you need.
But when you're trying to figure out what's wrong with your painting,
it doesn't matter what it looks like up close.
It matters what it looks like from about 7 feet away.
I think it was Rembrandt that said,
paintings are for looking, not for smelling.
Make sure when you're in that final workflow
and you've already covered the canvas with paint,
done all your color checking,
make sure that you're making those judgments from 7 feet away
and not right up close,
because it's much easier to look and decide,
especially looking for value problems and everything else,
from 7 feet away.
Now a lot of people ask me what sort of brushwork they should have.
And I actually don't care what sort of brushwork you have,
other than it should have an abstract quality to it.
Now what I mean is,
if you're filling in an area,
don't just fill it in with a clean line,
and your strokes are just stroke, stroke, stroke,
like you're being very deliberate about it.
But instead,
have a little bit of a messiness to your brushwork.
Or your edges aren't nice, clean lines,
but instead,
they should be a little bit jaggy
and a little bit messed up,
so that there's a little bit of abstraction in your brushwork.
It's really important,
and this should go without saying,
that you work from a quality, glossy, laminated photograph.
You can work from computer monitors,
but it's really almost,
it's very difficult to get good color matches.
You'd have to use like a color checker.
You have to make sure that your light is balanced
with your room light,
or you're checking your colors,
and the monitor.
So it can be done.
It's very difficult.
I've tried to do it myself,
and it's just really difficult to set up.
So the very best thing,
without any doubt,
is to work from a quality, laminated, glossy photograph.
And that means,
when you're developing the image,
you do it properly,
and that you're using a decent camera,
and everything else.
So here's a whole bunch of other videos,
that I've filmed,
related to how to paint an oil.
But keep in mind,
that this video that you're watching now,
is the core workflow for how to paint an oil.
And the rest of these videos,
that I would recommend that you watch,
will be very helpful.
But this is what you want to always come back to,
when you want to see the core instruction.
And that goes for the one on how to draw,
the one on how to mix colors,
and then this one,
how to paint an oil.
There are three in a series.
And so,
that's where you really always want to go back to.
When my students leave my private class,
on the last day,
I always give them a bit of advice.
And then that is,
that when you're confused,
go back to the workflow.
So if you get lost,
come back and watch this video,
and refer to this very strict workflow.
And that goes for the video on how to draw,
and the video on how to mix colors,
and then this video also,
on how to paint an oil.
And these are the core workflows for doing my method.
Well, thank you so much for watching,
and we'll see you in the next one.
