Hello all you freedom-loving people.
Welcome to another episode of Front Page.
I'm your host, Scott Cameron Goulet.
The Dow Jones Index surpassed a historic 40,000 points.
You can probably guess who the main booster was.
Thursday was a great day for President Trump.
More of President Trump's supporters showed up at the New York courthouse
to show their support for President Trump.
What was even better was the cross-examination in the courtroom.
A carefully crafted lie was punctured by clever questioning.
And Texas Governor Greg Abbott pardoned Sergeant Daniel Perry
who was convicted of murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison
for shooting in self-defense an armed Black Lives Matter protester.
Okay, let's get into it.
The Dow Jones rose above 40,000 points for the first time in early trading on Thursday.
This milestone is especially incredible
in an economy where the Fed has been raising interest rates for more than two years.
The Dow Jones was up 0.23% in early trading on Thursday at 40,051.05.
This is the latest peak in a long market that began in October of 2022.
One of the first boosters was Walmart as shares rose 6% on the back of strong first quarter results.
Walmart shares have risen 26% so far this year while the Dow Jones has risen more than 6% in 2024.
Amazon has also done well.
It just joined the Dow Jones index in the first quarter of 2024
and its shares are up more than 22% for the year.
Other top performers in the Dow Jones index this year include American Express and Goldman Sachs.
Both stocks have risen more than 20%
as investors bet that the economy will avoid a recession and consumption will remain strong.
Shares of tech majors including Amazon, MetaPlatform and Nvidia are also up sharply in 2024.
Experts say the outlook of the market looks optimistic in many aspects while some suspect manipulation.
With the exception of the Magnificent Seven,
everything from small caps to industrials have been on the rise lately.
Even the price of Bitcoin and gold have hit record highs in recent months.
Investors anticipate artificial intelligence boosting corporate profits
and the Federal Reserve possibly cutting rates later this year.
Recent data show that employment slowed in April
but the labor market remains strong on the surface and inflation has fallen back from its peak.
But not back to the Fed's stated target of 2%.
President Trump's Republican allies have appeared in growing numbers at his New York trial.
Members of the House Freedom Caucus stood outside the Manhattan criminal courtroom on Thursday
to voice their support for President Trump.
There were members present including Bob Good, the Chairman of the Conservative Caucus,
and Representative Matt Gaetz, Ralph Norman, Andy Biggs,
Diana Harshbarger, and Michael Gast.
Representative Michael Walls, who is not a caucus member, also attended.
Members of the caucus criticized Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen as untrustworthy.
He is told there is literally no branch of government that Michael Cohen has not lied to.
He lied to investigators. He lied to the judge who sentenced him.
He lied to the United States Congress and he committed these lies for his own benefit.
And while we're talking about what we saw in that courtroom going on for people's own benefit,
we would be remiss if we did not mention this corrupt judge.
This judge whose own family is making six figures off of Democrat politics
that continues to gaslight the country that there's some sort of crime committed by President Trump.
This is a made-up crime. No other American in the country would be charged with this type of crime.
Ana Paulina Luna criticized the trial process as not being fair and transparent.
I also want to point out that they are telling people that they can't have cameras in the courtroom,
but if they had nothing to hide and if they're truly being honest about this,
why is it that you guys can't be in the courtroom and see exactly what we're seeing?
Just because we're members of Congress does not mean we have authority more than you guys
to know exactly what's happening in that courtroom.
So just an update. The president is doing well. He's in good spirits.
We are here today because we know that this is nonsense and should not be happening in the United States of America.
Furthermore, to Cohen, who admitted to lying to members of Congress,
that's contempt of Congress, just so that you are tracking.
And I want to follow it up by saying this.
It is by no coincidence that you have Goldman, a member of House Oversight who's a Democrat,
prepared Cohen for his testimony, is also retainered by the judge's daughter as a client.
Does that seem like it's not shame to you?
Democratic Representative Dan Goldman of California said on MSNBC
that he had met with Cohen and prepared him for his testimony.
And I have deposed Michael Cohen. I have met with him a number of times to prepare him.
Goldman's office tried to explain that he was referring to Cohen's prior testimony in other cases,
and Goldman has had nothing to do with Cohen in this ongoing case in New York.
However, the public is still willing to believe that Goldman was talking about this trial in New York,
especially since the congressman mentioned the trial in New York immediately afterward.
He said this Trump trial has different testimony than what his demeanor was during the AG's case.
This is different than he has been in the past, but the question is not how he is on direct examination.
The question is how he is on cross-examination.
Public skepticism is especially logical in the context that Goldman also paid more than $150,000
to the political consulting firm of Judge Merchant's daughter, Lauren Merchant.
On Thursday, Todd Blanche, the defense attorney for President Trump,
accused witness Michael Cohen of lying during the trial,
casting doubt on the credibility of the key witness in a heated exchange shortly before the trial lunch break.
Blanche dismissed a phone call that is critical to the hush money case.
Two days ago, under questioning from prosecutors,
Cohen said that he spoke to President Trump on October 24, 2016.
Cohen said that he told President Trump that a hush money deal with porn star Stormy Daniels had been finalized.
Cohen said that he called President Trump's then bodyguard, Keith Schiller,
who in turn gave the phone to President Trump.
However, Blanche presented evidence to the jury that a teenager,
who identified himself as dope, had made repeated threatening phone calls to Cohen in the previous days.
Cohen had been receiving harassing phone calls for three days,
but the harasser forgot to block their own number.
Cohen texted the number saying that he would be turning the matter over to the Secret Service.
Cohen said that he learned or was told that it was a 14-year-old boy.
Then he texted Keith Schiller asking him to act on it.
So Todd Blanche asked Cohen,
then at 7.48 p.m. you texted Keith Schiller about the 14-year-old.
Cohen replied yes.
So then Keith Schiller left a voicemail at 8.01.
Then at 8.02 Schiller texted Cohen asking him to call.
And Cohen called him back at 8.02.
The call lasted less than two minutes.
Now back to the courtroom.
Todd Blanche asked Cohen on the witness stand,
at 8.14 p.m. you texted Keith Schiller the number that had been harassing you.
Cohen answered yes.
So then Blanche implied it is ridiculous that Michael Cohen
might have simultaneously reported a prankster to Keith Schiller
and talked to President Trump about the hush money payment.
Blanche said, you did not talk to President Trump on that night.
You talked to Keith Schiller.
Then Cohen replied, I'm not certain that's accurate.
So Blanche asked, now you're saying you're not certain it was accurate?
Then Cohen said, I believe that I also spoke to Mr. Trump.
So Blanche stated, you are lying.
Cohen tried to recover by saying, based on the records, I think I spoke about both.
Blanche said, you lied about this.
You said you didn't remember the harassing phone calls.
Now you claim that in the one minute and 36 second call,
you spoke about the harasser and Stormy Daniels?
Even CNN's Ellie Honig and Anderson Cooper thought Cohen's credibility had been shot.
I think if I was a juror in this case, watching that,
I would think this guy's making this up as he's going along,
or he's making this particular story up.
Todd Blanche is pointing out, you were testifying just on Tuesday in this court.
And all morning long he's been pointing out inconsistencies in Michael Cohen's testimony,
or at least questionable aspects of Michael Cohen's testimony,
but nothing that you would necessarily as a juror think, OK, that's clearly a lie.
Maybe he was misunderstanding or he was bragging or whatever.
This one, Todd Blanche clearly saved this to right before the lunch break, I'm assuming,
because it was just so well crafted.
And just point by point walking through this story, which at first seemed,
this seems like a ridiculous story, some 14-year-old is sending him nasty text messages
and he's going to call a Keith Schiller about it.
And then you realize, he showed the phone logs that the prosecutor had shown,
and it's the phone call that Michael Cohen had previously talked about.
I think it is severely damaging to Michael Cohen's testimony.
CNN legal analyst Ellie Honig said on Thursday that witness Michael Cohen
had his knees chopped out during defense lawyer Todd Blanche's cross-examination.
Have you ever seen something like this, kind of a twist like this?
I don't think I've ever seen a star cooperating witness get his knees chopped out
quite as clearly and dramatically as what just happened with Michael Cohen.
I've certainly seen very effective cross-examinations of cooperating witnesses.
I've seen aspects of their story cut into and called into question,
but this goes to the heart of the allegation here, that phone call on October 24th,
and it looks to the jury and to Anderson Cooper and Cara Scannell and Judge George Grasso
who are all in the courthouse, that that was a devastating moment.
In addition, the Trump defense also attacked Cohen's motivations.
Blanche played to the jury an audio clip of Cohen's podcast.
In one clip that was played in court on Thursday, Cohen could be heard using an explicative
and saying that he truly hopes that this man ends up in prison.
The image of Cohen that Blanche presented to the jurors
was that of a disgruntled ex-employee bent on revenge.
Cohen was heard saying,
It won't bring back the years that I lost or the damage done to my family,
but revenge is a dish best served cold.
You better believe that I want this man to go down.
Cohen also acknowledged telling a former prosecutor that he felt Stormy Daniels
and her lawyer were extorting President Trump in seeking the $130,000 payment
in order to keep quiet about her claim of a 2006 sexual encounter with President Trump.
Cohen told jurors,
Yes, I recall making a statement like that, that they were extorting Mr. Trump.
On Thursday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott pardoned Sergeant Daniel Perry
based on a unanimous recommendation from the Board of Pardons and Paroles.
Sergeant Daniel Perry was facing 5 to 99 years in prison
for shooting a BLM protester in self-defense.
This was in 2020 after the Travis County District Attorney, Jose Garza, sued him.
After a thorough examination, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles
recommended a pardon to the Governor's office.
The Board stated it extensively reviewed police reports,
court records, witness statements, and interviews with witnesses.
Yet Garza's office argued that the Board's decision and the Governor's pardon
amount to a mockery of our legal system.
Sergeant Daniel Perry, an Army soldier who shot and killed an armed BLM protester
in Austin, Texas in July of 2020, was indicted on a murder charge in 2021.
This was after Garza sought murder charges for self-defense.
According to David Fujit, the lead detective in the case,
District Attorney Jose Garza and his office allegedly directed him
to withhold exculpatory evidence and to demonstrate unethical
and biased misuse of his office in prosecuting Sergeant Perry.
Based on Fujit's claims, Garza and his office allegedly had him remove
100 pages of exculpatory evidence.
The DA's office allegedly shortened his presentation from 158 slides to 56 slides.
Fujit added this was likely criminal behavior.
The lawyer for Sergeant Perry, Clint Broden, argued that his client,
who was driving in an Uber when rioters mobbed his car, was acting in self-defense,
especially after BLM activist Garrett Foster pointed a gun at him.
Lawyer Broden stated,
It's important to note that the standard of proof required for an indictment
is significantly less than the standard of proof required for a conviction.
Shortly before he was shot dead, the BLM activist Garrett Foster
proclaimed that he brought an AK-47 to deal with those who oppose him.
There is also a still frame picture from the incident footage.
The frame appears to show Foster in a posture that looks like he pointed a weapon at the driver.
In their statement on the same day, Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton
criticized District Attorney Garza.
Abbott said in a statement,
Ken Paxton also stated,
And that's a wrap for this episode.
