Painting a Bear in Acrylics How To Paint Realistic Black Fur
Hi guys and welcome to Studio Wildlife
In today's video I'm going to show you how I painted this black bear
So I started by just using some black acrylic paint after I'd drawn my bear on my canvas in charcoal
And I just blocked out the darkest marks
This is a similar technique I used to my how to paint black fur video that I did a few weeks ago
But now I'm just showing you how I apply that technique to more realistic looking fur or realistic looking paintings
So I just use a flat brush and just water down acrylic paint just to block in the darkest areas of the fur
I do actually have a full version of this video on my Patreon channel if you want to check it out
It's the full 7 hour real time footage so that you can watch that and learn about my processes
And the colours and the brushes that I use for painting this bear
Once I've got my darks blocked in I will start to do an acrylic wash just using some very thin watered down paints
The colours that I'm using here are a brown, a black and a blue
Once this blocking stage is done I always start to work on the eyes next
So I try to get the eyes as good as I possibly can so that it gives me a focal point for this painting
Which is what I wanted for this bear
Once I've got the eyes done I needed to bring back some of the black fur strands
So I just use a small angled brush and some watered down black acrylic paint to do this
Exactly the same as in my quick and easy process video for painting black fur
I'm just applying this to my reference photo of a bear which I got from wildlifereferencephotos.com
Next using various browns like raw sienna, burnt sienna, burnt umber and raw umber and little bits of white
I started to build up the muzzle just using that small angled brush again to add in those fine strands
When you're painting short haired fur like this bear
It's always good to make sure that you have quite delicate and quite contrasting strands
So that it really gives that short spiky look to it that bears muzzles would have if you were up close to them
Next I move on to the nose and this is another one of the more detailed areas
So I first block in with black and then shade that over the top with some blues and some lighter washes
I'll just build that process until I'm happy I've got the darkest layers
And then start to refine even more by adding lighter and lighter layers on top of each other
I'll make the nose look wet and dimply by doing small dots getting lighter and lighter with each time
Finally adding my final highlights which aren't pure white but they're quite close to pure white
So they look bright, wet and give that realistic looking effect to the nose
I'm actually going to do a full tutorial where I share my full process for painting the nose
And that will be up in a few weeks on the YouTube channel
The next stage is really quite simple
It just involves building up lighter and lighter layers of fur over the top of the darker layers that I've just put underneath
And when I'm doing this just like with all my other wildlife paintings
I'm making sure to leave plenty of gaps between each fur strand so that you can see the strands of fur underneath
This makes the painting have a more realistic feel
The fur feels thicker, much more 3D and much more realistic
At the minute the bear is looking a little bit blue and that is intentional
So I build up my lighter layers
Build up that sort of almost 2D at this stage
This two-dimensional form
And then I will actually glaze with thin washes of colour the shadows over the top
To give it a bit more of a 3D appearance
Here I'm just adding those final little details for this layer of the bear
At this point I could have done this with a brush
But I decided to glaze my shadows using my airbrush
Just because I'm finding it so much quicker and so much easier to use
And I just get softer looking gradations between my colours
I also use the airbrush to add this misty effect to the background
Just building up in layers until I got the effect that I wanted
After this was done I just used my small detail brush to add the final intricate strands of fur
So I'm making sure to vary up the directions of those strokes
Adding a little bit more interest to the piece
And just building up on those layers that I've already put underneath
Once that's done I use the dagger brush just to add those final longer strands of fur
That are really thin
And that's it, I'm pretty much done with the piece
As I've already mentioned, the full version of this video is up on my Patreon channel
I'll put a link to that down in the description below
And it is in real time, so it's actually 7 hours worth of footage
And me going into more detail about my processes
And the colours and the brushes that I use for painting this bear
Here's the finished painting, it was so hard to photograph because it's so long
This one's actually getting shipped off to Tasmania very soon
Where it's been bought
And I actually finished it with a resin coat
To really give it that modern look
As always, thank you so much for watching
