I was wallowing in the drowning rain when the men came.
I knew the type of foot falls.
Plodding, trudging, slogging, some shuffled;
some trampled; some trundled.
From the dusk they emerged like children of the gloom.
They carried layers of smells.
Underneath the funk of sweat, I teased out wheat, sorghum, fodder,
and brown earth.
They were smells of dryness, of land, not of water and streams – not the rice, fish,
peach, melon, black soil smells of the villagers here.
They came from afar.
