In 1910, the inventor of the single-track train was definitely a genius.
He was the great inventor of Ireland, Lewis Brennan.
The train he invented only needed a track to run,
not only saving construction costs,
but also theoretically safer than ordinary trains,
because it would not derail when turning at high speed.
So how did he do it?
Don't worry, let's listen to the details.
To achieve the single-track driving of a train,
the first problem to solve is balance.
Lewis's method is to install a large trolley inside the train.
You can think of it as a high-speed rotating disk.
The power of rotation keeps the train balanced.
But soon, Lewis encountered a new problem.
That is, how to make the trolley turn in the direction of the train.
If the direction of the trolley is not consistent with the direction of the train,
then the train will lose balance.
Like this.
So Lewis came up with a genius method,
which is to install another trolley on the train,
let it rotate counterclockwise with the first trolley,
and then connect them with gears.
In this way, when the train turns,
the two trolleys will restrain each other,
but the train will always remain balanced.
Lewis's method was verified on the model,
but when he used this method to build a real single-track train,
he encountered new difficulties.
He found that his trolleys were too small,
and their strength was not enough to stand up a train weighing dozens of tons.
He wanted to make the trolley bigger and heavier,
but he found that this would make the train more difficult to balance,
and the space of the train was not enough to put such a large trolley.
He had no choice but to think of other ways to increase the power of the trolley.
So he added a motor to the trolley to make it run faster,
and then put them on a rotating stand
so that they can tilt with the train.
He also installed two blocks on the trolley shaft.
When the train tilts, the shaft will touch the block,
which will cause friction and make the trolley roll to one side,
which will give the train a reverse force to restore balance.
He thought this would do it,
but a new problem arose,
that is, the vibration of the train will make the trolley jump around on the block,
which will make the power of the trolley unstable.
Sometimes it's too big, sometimes it's too small,
and the train will shake and shake, which is very uncomfortable.
So he came up with a more genius way,
which is to use air pressure to control the power of the trolley.
He fixed the trolley on the train,
and then installed a lever on their shaft.
The lever can control two valves,
and the valve can control the flow of compressed air.
He also installed a large cylinder on the train.
There is a spacer in the cylinder.
The spacer can push the trolley to rotate.
When the train tilts, the trolley will drive the lever,
which will close a valve,
open another valve,
and let the compressed air flow from one side to the other,
pushing the spacer to move.
The spacer will push the trolley to rotate,
which will restore the balance of the train.
The advantage of this method is
that it can magnify the small pressure into a huge force,
because the pressure in the tube of compressed air is the same.
But when it comes to the large cylinder,
the pressure will become very large,
so the power of the spacer will be very strong,
which will allow the trolley to generate enough power to balance the train.
Fortunately,
the single-track train of Louis finally succeeded this time.
Unfortunately,
the single-track train was not widely used.
This is because every carriage of the single-track train
has to install a trolley,
which is very troublesome.
In addition, people at that time were used to the double-track train,
so the single-track train was gradually forgotten.
Until today,
we can appreciate its charm again.
