The Australian singer and #songwriter Luke O’Shea is a sixteen-times winner of the Golden Guitar award. This video was taken on 29 April 2024, when he performed The Seekers 1987 hit I am, you are, we are Australians at The Meeting of Two Cultures at #Kurnell, New South Wales. The Meeting of Two Cultures is an annual event organised by the Sutherland Shire Council to acknowledge the impact of the arrival of #Captain James #Cook’s ship Endeavour at Botany Bay in 1770 on the Goorawal and Gweagal people who lived at Kurnell at the time of the arrival. Local descendants of these original inhabitants who witnessed the arrival gave an #Aboriginal perspective of the significance of the 8-day visit, along with a range of demonstrations of Aboriginal cultural rituals.
During Cook’s stay in #Botany Bay, his crew collected fresh water as well as Aboriginal artifacts including spears. While the Endeavour was at anchor, one of Cook’s crew died on board from tuberculosis and was ordered by Cook to be buried ashore. This crewman, Forby Sutherland subsequently gave his name to Sutherland Shire. Forby’s grave is marked with a memorial plaque and is acknowledged every year as part of The Meeting of Two Cultures.
