1956年，杨官璘夺得首届全国冠军，成为象棋史上名冠全国的第一人。1957年第二届全国赛，杨官璘竞技状态极佳，以七胜九和积23分蝉联冠军，继续书写辉煌篇章。杨官璘在这次全国赛中过关斩将，往往是以自己研究有素而对手不大熟悉的布局而奏功的。在迎战新疆晏宗晋时，杨使出了于广州茶室流行的“厚记局”，在25个回合内闪电般的取胜。“厚记局”名扬全国，并入选50年代最佳顺炮。 反映了当时杨官璘等广东棋手在布局上的领先地位。
In 1956, Yang Guanlin won the inaugural national championship, becoming the first person in Chinese chess history to achieve such an honor. In the second national tournament of 1957, Yang Guanlin's competitive form was exceptional. With seven wins, nine draws, and a total of 23 points, he retained the championship, continuing to script a brilliant chapter in history. Throughout the tournament, Yang Guanlin's success often stemmed from his well-researched openings, which his opponents were not familiar with. When facing Xinjiang's Yan Zongjin, Yang employed the "Houji Formation," popularized in Guangzhou teahouses, and secured victory in just 25 moves. The "Houji Formation" gained nationwide recognition and was selected as one of the best Cannons-for-Rooks formations of the 1950s, reflecting the leading position of Yang Guanlin and other Guangdong chess players in opening strategies at that time.
