I've spoken about this in the past,
but I want to kind of review some of the different materials of how we make crowns.
Some of the different materials of how crowns are made.
In the past, it used to be all either gold crowns or metal crowns.
But now, as technology has improved, we have much better materials today.
And what we used to do quite often in the past was fabricate.
We used to make porcelain fused to metal crowns.
So there's a metal base, and then there's porcelain that's baked on top of it.
Very durable, very strong, and very good crown that lasts for years and years.
But there's pros and cons to having porcelain fused to metals.
One is, depending on the area of the mouth,
sometimes you may see a little dark shadowing from the metal.
And so patients who are very conscious about cosmetics,
especially if it's in the front teeth, you don't like seeing that dark shadow.
And so now, what we've done is we've gone away from using any metal in our crowns.
We use ceramics.
Mostly zirconias or some other type of ceramic material.
For the most part, especially in the back teeth, we do a lot of zirconia crowns
because it's very durable, very strong, doesn't fracture or break easily.
One of the disadvantages of porcelain fused to metal, the PFM crowns,
is that sometimes you get porcelain chipping, porcelain fracturing.
And so that's why we would recommend
maybe having to redo those crowns every 10 years, every 7 years.
And so another common question we get is,
well, if you do a crown today, how long is it going to last?
Is it going to last forever?
And I will tell you, no, it does not last forever
because nothing lasts forever.
I want it to last for a long, long time, but it's not going to last forever.
So the crowns today, what we make is a ceramic.
It's a zirconia metal. It has no metal in it.
So it's a full crown with no metal base, like you see in here.
This is all white.
So this entire crown is made from a block, a ceramic block.
And so it's either milled or printed, right?
But it has no metal in it.
These crowns are very, very strong, very durable.
But yet, again, it may not last forever.
And so we'll tell patients many times
you may need to redo those crowns every 10 years.
But if it's stable, there's nothing wrong with the crowns.
It can last longer.
I've had crowns last in patients' mouths for going on 30 years now
because it's well-made, well-fitted.
Patient doesn't have any gum disease.
Patient doesn't have any bite issues.
And the crowns are very, very durable.
So ceramic crowns, zirconia especially, will last a long time.
And again, I will tell patients that
you probably want to consider maybe replacing those crowns every 10 years.
Why? Well, because the mouth changes.
The teeth changes, meaning it shifts.
The bite changes.
So sometimes the crowns need to be remade
to get a better fit with the adjacent teeth
so maybe food doesn't get caught,
maybe the margins, maybe the gums have gone down a little bit.
So depending on some of those issues,
it may be recommended to replace those crowns.
But if those crowns are made well,
they don't need to be replaced every 10 years.
It can last for 10 years, 20 years, and hopefully even longer.
So now it's all ceramic.
Stay away from porcelain fused to metal.
We don't use any metal anymore.
We don't like metal.
And we want to keep it all white.
So thanks for joining us.
