Our First Buttresses - BIG STEP in Our Roundhouse Build?

[Music] hey guess where we're at hey we're back at the house how long has it been it's been a minute 2 months at least uh yeah so where we left off last was we started digging the buttress for that sort of new wall we were adding right and we got busy with the goar and then it rained and it's all like caved back in uh so we're going to have to fix that yeah so today we're focusing on cleaning up the buttresses getting those dug out to the proper depths and then we can put in our hardware cloth our Vapor Barrier and get some bags in there the hyper Adobe roundhouse is our most ambitious project yet taking everything we've learned from four years of experimenting with natural building and off-grid systems we've designed a unique earthbag structure that will serve as our family home in the centerpiece of our Homestead so far we've set the foundation dug out the trenches put the plumbing in laid three full courses below ground and now we're getting ready to build our first buttresses first step is to uh unwrap this straight wall thankfully we kept it all wrapped up during all the rain so there shouldn't be any moisture in it but we want to get it pulled apart so that we can see where those layers are and then figure out how deep to make the buttress trenches how much gravel to put in all that stuff [Music] oh [Music] is it the cleanest Rock we've ever put in a trench no is low back [Music] here okay so what's the next step are we doing we got to do hardware cloth y then and vapor barrier yeah so you want to help me cut some that [Music] okay overestimated a little bit this will have to [Music] go around this when we get to it all we need is this to cover that portion of the wall M these to cover that buttress this will cover this and then this will come on this what you doing well I have a bunch of dirt in the wheelbarrow cuz I back filled this little buttress here and so I thought we could just back fill this area I just need to cut some hardware cloth So eventually this um hardw cloth will go up and over the fourth course just a little bit yep and that would just help prevent you know rodents from possibly you want to get this filled in back on this other side just so it's so we can get closer to the bag yeah but we're only going to do this side and only to that buttress we'll have a back fill party later yeah we need to it'd be a lot safer and working on this new wall attached to Ashley and I's bedroom that will hide a private soaking however it has rained a lot since we dug this trench out and the ground has all collapsed in it's not the will go over it and then we'll be ready to start the fourth course scratch that we have three because we didn't put rock down cuz we didn't have any it's fine not a big deal we just did an extra layer running out of material we're really scraping the ground trying to get the very last bit of ab mix that we have over there kids have been trying to break it up and get it all usable yeah I think by the end of the day they just didn't have it in them to like dig up more so anyway we went out we got out this this morning we already did that I think we have enough sort of loosened up to um to do this last one we just got to do the last one it's got to go over the existing bag and then we'll be ready to start the fourth coursewhere else everywhere else other than the course we already did with gridlessness yeah thanks guys um yeah so we're excited to get that fourth course on and then we get to start door frames oh my goodness can you believe it we're almost there we're almost done things are going to look so completely different once we have the two three four a lot of door Fram um and then we get to back fill all the trenches and it's it's going to change a lot but we still have a go okay let's do it [Music] we're keeping track of how many batches it takes how many wheelbarrow loads to do this 24 ft so far that little bit is five wheel barrows full so I'm guessing it'll probably be about 16 is my guess what's your guess I don't know that sounds pretty good 16 batches we'll see well you have to have something different than me cuz if I beat you then that's better so we have five batches already 20 you guess 20 yep that's a bad guess you made me pick one different than you so that's what I'm going with a how many batches do you think it's going to take to finish this 24t run we've only done five so far what's your guess on total 15 15 MH that was my guess you can't guess 15 you said 16 oh wait did I say 16 okay 15 a is 15 a is keeping track of how many batches we've done so this was number 10 10 all right that's batch number 12 we may have a problem well I don't have a problem but I think you have a problem I have a problem I think my 16's wrong I closest to being right by the exact same amount so we both won so we're both right and wrong oh well I was really hoping that that would be Fuller on the end but it's not at all so what's that method called babe I don't know did I have a name for it I think you called it chop something chop Cho and Scoot I don't know it looks good from back here I just know that this bag is a little lower so I want a little more material in the end here to try to get it to match [Music] up I've been away for far too long but now I'm on my way back home I hear the West Winds calling I'm my name they telling
