This is the first tutorial in a series of how to write great poetry. In this video, I address a basic poetic principle: “aim for beauty.” The current vogue of stylistic minimalism, and the political agenda that is behind it, tends to favor ugliness rather than beauty. In aiming for true beauty in your writing, you will need to use the entire range of the English language to build up a ‘vocabulary of beauty’ around such themes as art, religion, the senses, and especially nature.
