Hello and welcome to the Pedicated Swashbuckler.
My name is Maren and today we are making another dress.
So this is probably I think the last part of my 1929 domestic servant capsule wardrobe series.
Has this become a series? I feel like it kind of has.
So anyway I have made loads of clothing. I've made underwear, I've made a suit and a blouse,
I've made an afternoon dress, I made a hat. I don't really need more I think but the truth is
I am a bit of a magpie and I would really like to make a nice evening dress for my domestic servant.
It does not have to be something that's very fashionable. In 1929 she might have
been given it by an employer. She might have bought it used very probably.
And it does not have to be very overly like fancy but I do have this which is black rayon satin.
It's really nice, really shiny and beautiful and it's very lightweight so I think it'll drape
really nicely. And I do have from a previous project, I have some very nice beaded little
applique pieces. I'm not sure if you can see but they are so shiny and gorgeous,
like really very glittery and beautiful. And I do also have some kind of glass pearls,
big and small glass pearls. So I would really like to make like a very simple one hour dress
just like maybe with like beads instead of shoulder seams, maybe with like a little bit
of applique on each hip or something. But really quite simple so that I can dress it up and down
depending on what I want and need. So that's the plan for today. Apparently it's only going to take
me one hour. Hang on. So according to this one, the one hour dress with 17 new designs from 1924
which I bought from email vintage patterns is a little bit old-fashioned for 1929 which suits
me perfectly. According to this, a certain Mary Brooks Pickens made this dress in 34 minutes
which was the record according to the New York newspapers and it was attested by the officials
of the National Merchandise Fair. So this really shouldn't take me too long but knowing me
and the speed I usually work at and the amount of like fluff I would like to include, it's probably
going to take a little bit longer than 34 minutes. But let's see. One hour dress. Wanna come along?
I ended up clocking in at about four hours for my one hour dress which isn't too bad but
I wasn't completely happy with it. I would have liked it to be a tiny bit more fitted.
It was a little bit boring for me. I like the details on the shoulders. I like the applique
on the hips but the applique was a little heavy for the fabric so the fabric would kind of
pull the fabric down a little bit so it wasn't my best piece of work. However, I came across
a gloriously sequined fabric, just amazingly beautiful, on sale and it was just enough
to make another one hour dress. So that's what I did. My sequined dress is made the same way.
It does not have pearls on the shoulders, just a tiny shoulder seam. It doesn't have the scoop
neckline, just a straight across neck opening. And instead of pleating the extra fullness
on the hips, I have just left it as it is. I'm hoping I'll have a chance to wear this
a lot of times. It makes me feel really glamorous and I will also very soon
publish another video where I'll show you a little bit how all the pieces I've made can
work together as a capsule wardrobe. But until next time, bye!
