"He (Joachim Raff) added two flutes to the classical wind octet of two oboes, clarinets, horns and bassoons to make the sound more brilliant and airy. This is not the only reason why the Sinfonietta is true spring music, but also because of its joyful mood in the pastoral key of F major. It was written in the spring of 1873 in Wiesbaden. It begins with a full-blown allegro in sonata form, followed by a scherzo in a swinging six-eighth metre. In the rondo-like form of this movement, it is not so much the brief main theme in F minor that sets the tone as the beautiful, lyrical secondary theme. Much is reminiscent of Mendelssohn, especially the succinct, effective ending. The Larghetto effectively alternates between two themes, the second of which is a typical, calm and pensive Raff melody. A sparkling staccato opens the festive and cheerful finale. As the Sinfonietta was published by a Leipzig publishing house as early as 1878, it was in widespread use at the end of the 19th century."
