In this video I'm diving into some of Costco's most talked-about culinary offerings: the spicy Korean Fried Chicken, the creamy delight dubbed the "World's Best Mac and Cheese," and the refreshing Vietnamese Iced Coffee.
Hey guys, it's Mike Chen on this week's Costco food review, traditional Vietnamese coffee and the world's best mac and cheese.
So, world's best mac and cheese, savor the richness of penne folded with our award-winning flagship cheese
and it's handmade cheese since 2003.
So this is a very popular mac and cheese shop at Pike's Place in Seattle.
Let's cook this up.
This mac and cheese had my mouth watering since about the 20-minute mark in the oven.
So you cook it for 30 minutes, take it out, then take off the plastic cover, put it back in for 10 more
and out comes the super gooey, cheesy, covered pile of penne pasta.
This is absolutely mind-blowing.
Wow.
Obviously, very rich, very cheesy.
I think there's cheddar cheese in here, some jack cheese, a little bit of heat, some smoky element to it as well.
I mean, typically, mac and cheese is just gooey and rich, but this...
Also, a ton of different flavors.
There's a lot of different herbs and spices in here.
I think this is the most spiced up, flavorful mac and cheese I've ever had.
Also, the pasta's just perfect.
Chewy, al dente, such amazing texture.
And the cheese goes inside the pasta, so when you're biting down, it just oozes out.
I mean, this thing has all the elements that you would love in a traditional mac and cheese
combined with just a sophisticated, delicious, flavor-filled meal.
I mean, I could eat this whole thing because it doesn't get boring.
It does not feel like it ever gets too much or too rich.
You just want more.
To say this is the world's best mac and cheese, can't say I disagree with that.
Oh, actually, I know a way to make this even better.
Be right back.
I don't know how many of you guys do this, but add some honey to your mac and cheese.
The best is hot honey.
If you don't have that, any honey would do.
The honey balances out the richness of the mac and cheese, adding sweetness and umami to this already amazing dish.
Yeah, that honey was definitely a level up.
Don't believe me? Give it a try.
Obviously, eating the mac and cheese, it's gonna make you thirsty.
Perfect time to try this, Vietnamese coffee.
And these all come frozen, so just leave one in your fridge and let it thaw.
And this is cafe latte concentrate, so six ounces of this, and fill the rest of the glass up with ice, and that's it.
Mmm.
Oh my gosh.
Wow.
Tastes like something you get from a cafe.
The flavors are deep, it's really rich.
If you've never had Vietnamese coffee before, a key feature is that the coffee is mixed with condensed milk.
And that adds a really creamy, rich texture, and of course a sweet contrast to the strong, dark coffee.
Oh, this is just perfect.
It gets you such a smooth, velvety mouthfeel.
This thing is phenomenal.
Definitely two for two on this food trip.
In this Costco food review, Chinese roast pork and Korean octopus fried rice.
So this is the Chinese-style cured barbecue pork.
This thing is fully cooked.
Inside, there's hot mustard, so you can just literally slice this and eat it with the hot mustard.
Now, Chinese roast pork is a very versatile ingredient.
You can eat it hot, you can eat it cold, you can put it in noodles and rice and buns.
So I think it's pretty fitting to add it here, into my octopus fried rice.
When I bought these, I didn't even think about putting them together.
This is what I like to call food serendipity.
And this one is fully cooked, so you can just slice it as is and eat it.
So when you open the roast pork, there's three chunks in there.
You got three packs of spicy mustard, there's some sesame seeds, and they look really pretty.
It's got a nice and pretty red smoke ring.
Just gonna slice off a piece and put some mustard on here.
I'm gonna forego the sesame this time.
First impression, I think it's just okay.
Flavors are very subtle, not very sweet, not very much of anything.
I think the spicy mustard is a good touch, because without that, it becomes a little hard to swallow.
Also, the texture is a tad dry, a little tough, which I wouldn't mind if the roast pork has a ton of flavor.
I like to chew.
This, not a lot of flavor to release, especially the end pieces.
That's really dry.
Let's toss it in with some fried rice.
It looks good, it smells really good.
If I had an egg right now, it would make this look even prettier.
That fried rice is incredible.
Wow.
Oh, my tongue feels like someone just took a flamethrower to it.
They have giant chunks of octopus in here.
There's so much spicy umami.
You taste the gochujang, you taste the scallions.
That octopus is so freaking tender.
And then that awesome heat kicks in right after it goes down the hatch,
and it is some intense but delicious, feel-good type of heat.
Oh, this is an amazing fried rice.
It takes only about two and a half minutes to cook, super easy.
I think this fried rice goes really good with chashu.
Texture of the roast pork, much better than the fried rice.
Much, much better.
Still a little dry, but much better.
After it's cooked with the fried rice, you can taste more of the sweetness of the roast pork.
I do feel like the roast pork adds to it.
It's definitely more savory, it's got more textures.
Again, I don't think that's one of my favorite roast porks,
but in the fried rice, especially in this fried rice, delicious.
Oh, also, I don't have this in my fridge right now.
I wish I did.
If you have some mozzarella cheese,
I would recommend putting that on the fried rice,
pop it into the microwave for about a minute.
It's gonna make this even better.
On this week's Costco Food Review,
Korean-style crunchy chicken and Portuguese egg tarts.
So this is Korean-style crunchy chicken with sweet and spicy sauce.
There's two packs of chicken in here,
and there's two packs of sauce in every pack of chicken.
Let's cook this up.
So this thing, about 16 minutes in the air fryer,
the outside gets really, really crispy and nice,
and the sauce, you toss it into some boiling water for about half a minute.
The sauce is very thick and sticky.
The outside of the chicken, really crispy and nice.
The sauce is good, not that much heat.
It's definitely very rich, and it has a good amount of umami,
so the sauce is not bad.
And Bibigo is typically a brand I like a lot.
I love their dumplings.
There's something that's just off with this.
I feel like overall, it's a little doughy.
The chicken tastes a bit mushy.
And there are pieces, I swear to goodness,
like the one I just ate.
I can't tell if there's chicken in there.
I mean, it's delicious crunchy breading and a nice sauce.
I really can't taste the chicken.
Let me try a bigger piece here.
Alright, that piece, I taste more of the chicken,
and I can see the chicken.
But this thing just tastes more doughy than anything else.
If you ever had Korean fried chicken from a restaurant,
it's a billion times better than this.
Honestly, I was so excited for this.
Coming from Costco, coming from Bibigo,
I thought this was gonna be some amazing stuff.
I mean, I didn't expect it to taste as good as a Korean fried chicken restaurant,
but at least something passable when I don't have one near me.
I mean, at this point, might as well go to your local McDonald's,
get some of the McNuggets,
toss some of the sauce on there.
It'll probably taste better than this.
I mean, this thing tastes less like Korean fried chicken,
more like Korean fried dough.
Next food item though,
Nadas, Portuguese egg tarts.
I have a good feeling about this.
Well, I had a good feeling about the Korean fried chicken too, so.
Never ask this egg tart to pick you up from the airport
because it's just way too flaky for that.
This thing is just ridiculously buttery and crispy.
Taste a little bit of the caramelization on top.
The custard is rich and sweet and just so satisfying.
For a frozen egg tart,
I think this is about as good as you're gonna get.
If you've never had Nadas before,
they're one of the greatest dessert items on the planet.
I'll link a video to a great Nadas place I went to recently down below.
When I was in Portugal,
I ate about half a dozen of these every single day.
They're so good.
So if you've never had one before,
and there's not a lot of bakeries that make Nadas,
head to Costco and try this out.
My mouth is actually watering from the last egg tart I just ate, so.
I'm gonna go make another one.
And as always, thank you all so much for watching this Costco food review.
Until we eat again, see you later.
