Buddhist mantra Sabbe Satta Sukhi Hontu

Sabbe Satta Sukhi Hontu can be broken down and understand in the following way.

Sabbe (all)
Satta (beings)
Sukhi (happy/healthy/well)
Hontu (may they be)

This can be defined as “All beings, happy may they be.” Happy can often be thought to also mean well or healthy. This chant can be said alone or as a part of a group chant to wish well upon one another. It can be used as a part of a formal meditation, or this mantra can be repeated while you are engaged in any type of activity, like walking or driving.

There are several variations on Sabbe Satta Sukhi Hontu, which can be slightly modified to suit the moment and the meaning of the chant. Some of these variations could include the following.

Sabbe Satta Avera Hontu, which translates to “May all beings be free from enmity and danger.”
Sabbe Satta Abyapajjha Hontu, which translates to “May all beings be free from mental suffering.”
Sabbe Satta Anigha Hontu, which translates to “May all beings be free from physical suffering.”
Sabbe Satta Dukkha Muccantu, which translates to “May all beings be free from suffering.”
Sabbe Satta Sukhi Attanam Pariharantu, which translates to “May all beings protect themselves joyfully.”

Sabbe Satta Sukhi Hontu is said to be a part of the practice of Loving Kindness meditation. While most religious practices strive to teach us the best ways to love our neighbors and turn the other cheek when we have been offended or wounded, it can be incredibly difficult to actually achieve this. When the practice of Loving Kindness is integrated with a number of the teachings of Buddhism, we can find ourselves moving closer to the development of the healthier and much more open and loving relationship with those around us. Most importantly, we can find ourselves moving closer to developing the ideal relationship with ourselves. Sabbe Satta Sukhi Hontu is often considered to be the very heart and key to Loving Kindness because it helps us to recognize and experience the realization that all beings long for happiness and peace, while avoiding the experience of suffering. This chant helps us to have an honest empathy for the well-being of those around us.

Sabbe Satta Sukhi Hontu can help us to transform our habituated mental patterns that are infused with negativity into mental patterns that are much more embracing of the practices of Buddhism as a whole. There are a couple of different ways that you can use Sabbe Satta Sukhi Hontu to help focus your thoughts and your mental self, and there are a few different types of individuals that you can work to develop Loving Kindness towards.

A person you hold in high esteem and have much respect for. A spiritual teacher is a prime example of this.
A person who you love dearly. An example of this could be beloved friend or a close member of your family.
An individual you have no personal feelings towards but see on a regular basis, like a person you see in your favorite coffee shop.
A person with whom you are having some form of difficulty with, like a hostile co-worker or someone you are in a challenging relationship with.

By chanting the Sabbe Satta Sukhi Hontu mantra you will be able effectively break down the mental barriers that you have, mental barriers that are very likely to be the course of the conflict and stress that you are experiencing within your relationships.

Repeat the mantra, visualizing the person in your mind, and visualizing the mental and emotional barriers of conflict coming down. This can occur anywhere, and at any time. While some forms of meditation may require silence, solitude, and the need to sit still and reflect, the Sabbe Satta Sukhi Hontu mantra is an honest and beautiful-sounding chant that can be recited no matter where you are.

Use the Sabbe Satta Sukhi Hontu after an interaction with a particularly challenging co-worker, use it after a difficult argument with a friend or family member, or simply chant it as a means of helping you to break down those mental barriers so that you can think only Loving Kindness towards each and every person that you interact with on a daily basis.
