Rosalind Chao talks about why she joined the cast of “3 Body Problem” and her character transformation in the show.
That's a video game?
Where's the rest of it?
That's it.
What kind of game is this?
I don't know.
I played Pong.
Alright, welcome back to GMA3.
That was a clip from the new Netflix series
Three Body Problem, a reality
bending cross-continental adventure
across time and
space. And this new series will have you
literally on the edge of your seat.
And here now with more is one of the show's stars
please welcome
Rosalind Chow.
This show's kind of crazy.
Yes.
Because the showrunners are the minds
behind Game of Thrones.
What drew you to this project?
The showrunners behind Game of Thrones.
I love them so much.
I'm a little obsessed with them.
I'm suffering separation
anxiety because I'm not with them now
because they were on the set
from beginning to end
watching every scene.
So you knew that you were in good hands.
There were no surprises afterwards.
People didn't come up to you afterwards
saying, what the hell?
They're just
the best bosses ever.
And I knew it from the first
second I met them that they were going to be
special. Because I never watched
Game of Thrones.
I'd love to hear that. And you describe
the transformation process that your character
goes through as fascinating.
Talk about the transformation
and what was that like?
To make a long story short
it would be an hour
and a half.
She would make me scrunch my face
and then glue things together
that you never want to have glued together.
Did that work?
You get used to it.
And then they would paint
my hair gray every day.
And then remove it with alcohol.
So she would do me
and then after an hour and a half look at me
and say, I'm sorry.
Not what you want to hear her make a part of.
Well that's the amount of work it takes
to get into this character. I want to make sure
I do the character's name justice.
So it's Ya-Wen-Jae.
Ya-Wen-Jae. Got it.
And you play a character who alters the course
of humanity. Can you tell us about that character?
Yes, well, yeah
I'm just going to say yeah.
Yeah, it goes through extreme trauma
in her young life.
And as far as she knows
the world is falling apart.
Not just her world, but the entire world.
The environment is falling apart.
People are behaving horribly to each other.
And as far as she knows
there is no way
to save humanity.
So she makes a big decision
that then affects all of humanity
and could destroy humanity.
Wow. I'm so excited to see this.
That's very deep and very dark.
Yeah, but it's funny too
at times.
I don't normally like these
kind of things, to be honest.
But I love this. And even though I've read
the script and seen the
filming, I was
on the end of my seat too.
And were you sold instantly when you
were offered the part?
I never saw a script, but
Alex Wu, who's also one of the
producers, actually in a meeting
they have him tell the story
and at the end of the meeting
my mouth was like
this. But I tried to
talk them out of hiring me, to be honest.
What? I know, crazy, right?
Because the age
you know, I wasn't sure if we
could do it, you know, but
they are so can-do.
These are the best people
to ever work with, I'm just saying.
You weren't sure you could do the
aging process?
Yeah, I just wasn't sure about the whole
process and I hadn't
seen a script. There were a lot
of things involved, but you know,
once I met them,
they're very can-do.
That's all I can say. Like when you
watch Game of Thrones, that
wasn't great by accident.
It was great because
basically all the actors
feel like they can do anything.
We're scientists.
That's amazing. Well, Rosalyn, thank you so much for being
with us today. Thank you for having me.
And you can check out 3 Body Problem
debuting tomorrow on Netflix.
When she said frown and then bringing the
glue, I was like...
Every woman's nightmare.
Right?
