3)It is not transformative in nature. 艾爾加是英格蘭的作曲家、指揮家。他原為音樂教師、小提琴家。他所寫的音樂，常常在世界各地的演奏會上出現。其中最有名的，莫過於「謎語變奏曲」
1898年的某一天，艾爾加對著鋼琴隨便即興彈奏旋律。妻子愛麗絲剛好從旁走過，問他這是什麼旋律，並説，她喜歡這旋律，要他再彈一次給她聽。艾爾噶回答説，「沒什麼。不過，使用這段旋律，也許可以寫些音樂。」他為了討好妻子，依此旋律彈出各種形態的音樂，然後想出一個個親友，説：「如果是他，給人的印象就像這樣；如果是她，就會給人另一種印象，像這樣。」艾爾加根據他們各人的性格而彈奏出不同的變奏, 擁有14個變奏的《謎語變奏曲》
就是如此誕生。艾爾加將之獻給那些「我用音樂繪畫出的好友們」。
