第3號A大調，作品40-1，「軍隊」（1838）
這是蕭邦的所有作品中最有名的一首，也是在波蘭舞曲中常與「英雄波蘭舞曲」相提並論的名曲。波蘭舞曲本來就有威風凜凜的節奏，樂曲本身就有軍隊的性格，而這一首更是徹底表現這種性格，毫無蕭邦作品特有的抒情性。有些人覺得這不像是蕭邦而不喜歡此曲，有些人則喜歡此曲具有的明快而有力的曲趣。
樂曲結構是典型的三段體。主部開始於A大調，出現許多有力和聲的明快樂句。演奏時需要有連打技術，手掌也要大一點。手小的演奏者要彈此曲，常常有點困難。中間樂段是D大調。據說，蕭邦很不喜歡這個調性。其中有左右8度的乖離音階，因此有很多人覺得很難演奏。這裡有8度音的大音量。中間樂段結束後，主部再現，這部分與前面的主部完全一樣。沒尾聲，音樂忽然結束。
