GRANDMOTHER AND GRANDSON

By the window in a cosy room
An old woman knits a stocking
And through her big glasses
Stares continually at the corner.

In the corner a curly-headed boy
Leans silently against the wall.
His face shows concerning
His glance is focussed on something.

"Why are you still sitting at home, grandson?
You could go into the garden, dig some flowerbeds,
Or call you sister
and play with her at horses."

The grandson went up to his grandmother
And lay his curly head in her lap.
He's silent,
With big eyes
he looks at her slyly...

"Does that mean you want a treat?"
The old woman says to him.
"Some grapes or berries?
Or do you need a toy?"

"No, I don't need any treats!
I have a lot of toys.
Buy me a bag and show me
The way to get to school."
