When Jonas Salk received the land in 1959, it was populated with a grove of eucalyptus trees which would obscure the buildings from the street. Kahn designed the parking lot so that scientists would wander through the trees and discover these buildings on a daily basis as one would discover a monastery surrounded by nature.
