這首作品是貝多芬最善於使用對比與發展的C小調，共3個樂章：

1.朝氣勃勃的快板，奏鳴曲式。第一主題多少有一些英雄性質，第二主題更富歌唱性，它們的發展很具戲劇性。
2.廣板，在這個樂章中，鋼琴聲部有比較寬廣的發展，採用聲樂藝術中類似朗誦調到花腔的各種方式展現鋼琴的技巧。其中鋼琴“朗誦”的片斷與樂隊的關係意味深長，而“花腔”式的鋼琴音型處理非常複雜，由64分音符組成的音型比比皆是。
3.快板迴旋曲，大致的三段體。在這個樂章中，基本主題開始有五彩繽紛的變化。這種變化似乎是由一件樂器一件樂器之間的傳遞來完成。在第三段開始，在一段不長的賦格之後，有急劇而又饒有趣味的調性變換。尾聲速度極快，表達出生動的幻想。
