Background

Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong, is a spiritual practice that millions around the world have made a part of their lives. Rooted in Buddhist tradition, it consists of two main components: self-improvement through the study of teachings, and gentle exercises and meditation.

Falun Dafa was originally taught in China by Mr. Li Hongzhi, the practice’s teacher. First made publicly available in 1992, Falun Dafa spread quickly, largely by word of mouth. By 1999, an estimated one hundred million people were practicing Falun Gong in China.

Jiang Zemin, former head of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), perceived the spiritual discipline's growing popularity as a threat to the CCP's atheistic ideology and on July 20, 1999, issued an order to ban the practice. Since then, thousands of practitioners have been confirmed to have died as a result of the persecution, and millions of Chinese people have since been abducted, imprisoned, tortured, fired from jobs, expelled from school, or forced into homelessness because they practice Falun Gong.
