Hubud is a traditional drill of Filipino Martial Arts that allows the practitioner to train many repetitions in a shorter amount of time. By adding more angles and techniques we can bring a level of unpredictability into the training flow. In this video I show you how to begin this drill using the knife and the first three primary angles of striking. https://youtu.be/DTV3nFY7rIM

with the knife let's go over some of the
basic angles of strikes or attacks
within this Hoopa drill I love the Hoopa
drill because it's a great flow drill
that we can cycle a lot of repetitions
in a very short amount of time so grab
your training knife grab your training
partner and let's do it you might have
seen the huba drill here at the college
Center YouTube channel before where we
worked it in the empty hands and we have
that angle one where Tom's gonna come in
and he's going to get that cut I'm going
to stop it then I'm going to raise it or
pass it and then I'm gonna trap it then
I'm gonna do the same thing I'm going to
attack that angle one back Tom stops it
with his left form he's gonna raise it
and pass it over and then he can trap it
you can trap Palm up over the elbow or
Palm down on the forearm either one play
with both variations but let's go ahead
and flow out this angle one get a couple
reps in and then we'll get to the next
angle make sure that you watch this
video all the way through so you get all
three of the basic angles that we're
going to be showing you in this video so
let's rep this out remember it's three
beats stop it
raise and pass it
trap it and then attack and on the
attack he stops it he raised to pass it
and traps so just remember that okay
stop raise trap stop raise trap or stop
past trap
and get it flowing
let's take a look at how we utilize the
angle 2 in the hubot flow with the knife
so what I like to do when I'm teaching
this is we start off with the angle one
get a little bit of rhythm going here
so that way we could teach the
transition at the same time so as soon
as I trap this down instead of going to
my angle one I'm going to fire my angle
two Tom's gonna stop it with his left
hand or forearm and then the same
pattern repeats he's going to raise it
to keep it on the outside
trap the elbow and then he's going to
strike his angle too I'm going to stop
it raise it and trap it angle two he
stops he raises and he traps so let's
flow out the angle two
for a third strike and angle let's work
on that angle five or what we call the
center line thrust so this one's really
cool because it's only a two count so as
Tom thrust angle five I'm going to use
my forearm to tap and Parry it to the
side and then my left hand comes
underneath and I'm going to grab the
elbow and I'm going to keep it up now in
reality I want this to be up and then
I'm going to thrust underneath but we're
going to keep the drill going so as soon
as I do this then I let Tom do the same
thing he's going to tap and Parry it
with his form of the right hand and then
he's going to trap That Elbow up all
right so let's work this out Perry and
trap tap parry and trap and then we work
this out now you can have your left foot
forward on this just like right now you
can step through with your right foot
forward you can change the energy on all
of these let's kind of turn it like
right here perfect I think that's a good
view so we can work in different
variations of the footwork
okay and then as you're getting better
with this you can speed up the drill you
can intensify the pressure and all that
stuff and now once we have
the angle five down the angle one and
the angle two now we can go through and
transition between all three of these
angles so we have the angle one
trap it down to the angle two
and as we trap it down check it out I
can get this cut right here and go into
angle five
and you can start to mix and match this
stuff okay I can come out look at that
reverse into that angle two
back to the angle one and this is what I
love about the huba flow in Filipino
martial arts because you can start to
just free flow and the more techniques
and angles and attacks and counters that
you add into this drill the more this
drill can become more and more
unpredictable with all these different
changes
so we're gonna flow it out here to end
