Countless marine animals frolic on the steep slopes of underwater volcanoes. In many cases, several are rare species that are not found elsewhere. This is partly because plankton clings to the wall and provides the fish with plenty of food. This documentary shows several of these oases and also examines the impact that diving tourism has and whether preventative measures can help maintain them. Nature and underwater film director Rolf Möltgen goes on dives into the mysterious underwater mountain landscapes with marine scientists from all corners of the world. This trip takes us to Mexico, snappers, white tip reef sharks, Galapagos sharks and giant manta rays. We visited the Maldives, Colombia and Costa Rica, where the team documents rare species such as deep-sea burbotans, small-toothed sand tigers and dogfish sharks, at depths of more than 3 metres. The eerie underwater world of the mountains demonstrates that everyone participates in the web of life. Thanks to the consistency of protection rules, it has been possible to conserve underwater diversity, especially in unique high seas oases.
