韋瓦第任教威尼斯女孤兒院之時，有很長一段時間，他是院裡唯一的絃樂老師，因此除了教小提琴之外，也必須承擔大提琴教學。他一共為大提琴寫了九首奏鳴曲，受限當時市場，生前並未出版。其手稿，RV40/41/43/45/46/47等六首，目前由巴黎國家圖書館典藏，RV39/44兩首在拿波里音樂院圖書館，RV42由德國某貴族世家收藏，RV38原本在萊比錫某出版商手中，可惜後來遺失。韋瓦第讓大提琴同時扮演高音主唱和低音伴奏雙重角色，因此充滿內在自我對話的開闊視野，此外，嚴肅態度和深沉表情，也是其小提琴作品所罕見
