Depression, every winter, seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, plagues millions across the world.
A prominent psychiatrist explains how not to treat it. NTD's Virginia Gibson has more.
Every winter, millions of people experience SAD, or seasonal affective disorder,
a type of depression that involves sadness, reduced energy, and feelings of hopelessness.
Depression is a psychological and spiritual phenomena. It is not caused by biochemical
imbalances in the brain, which is an advertising gimmick by the drug companies.
Psychiatrist Peter Bregan is the author of Psychiatric Drug Withdrawal. He believes
people should not take medication to treat depression because he believes depression
is not an illness. Bregan says it's never been proven that depression is caused by
biochemical imbalances in the brain, despite the best efforts of the pharmaceutical companies.
My colleagues in psychiatry want to call it a disease so then we can charge high prices,
higher than the therapists generally do, or our doctors, and we can prescribe drugs,
which is by far the best way to make money as a psychiatrist. The media participates in this
because they get a ton of advertising from the pharmaceutical industry. Bregan says he used to
talk about this on TV shows like Oprah, 60 Minutes, and Larry King Live, but ever since
the media started doing direct-to-consumer drug advertising, they stopped having him on. Instead
of taking medication, Bregan recommends exercise, healthy eating, and seeing a good therapist,
a therapist you can really connect with, one you could consider your friend. Virginia Gibson, NTD News.
