need watch time this i keep on watching
playlists are often overlooked and yes
i've just heard you grown oh really alan
i'm gonna get more watch time by people
watching playlists i get it i get it i
truly do but if you theme a playlist
properly so all of a specific event or
all of a specific style or i i really
like financial and crypto videos i'll
binge watch them back to back but when i
have a little bit of time and want some
fun i'll go up and watch scott the waz
or philip defranco or
game grumps or
vsauce and i'll actively want to watch
them back to back to back i don't want
the auto play thing to suggest them for
me because sometimes it pushes me
elsewhere so if you can land people in
playlists and make them watch from that
playlist video it strings them along you
can do this in two ways one hint that
they've got a video that they should
really watch that's super secret and
i've linked it in the description down
below and that links through to a
playlist that they can binge watch
that's helpful or funny or entertaining
for them alternatively when you share
your video first of all in social media
and tick tock and twitter and forums and
reddit instead of just sharing the video
link you actually share the video link
within the playlist that then jumps them
into the playlist and at the end of that
video it will auto play the next video
within that playlist not the auto play
not the suggested video it will play the
next video within your playlist so
therefore if they are listening and they
are passive and they're doing the dishes
they could listen to three or four of
your videos or watch three or four of
your videos or if your content for
example is kids tv stuff you've got a
four-year-old sat in front of a tv that
now continues to watch the next i don't
know
baby bum coco melon
doggy episodes back to back to back to
back giving you more
watch time and retention retention is
key there's no point in having a 10
minute video if they jump off within 20
seconds if you click baited them into a
title that doesn't have anything to do
with it or it is so boring and ear
splittingly painful to listen to or so
hard to watch retention here is key you
need to understand that the video needs
to be long enough to satiate their needs
not too short that they wanted much more
and not too long that they get bored and
hop out of the video you'll notice with
this video for example there's b-roll to
keep you interested i zoom in and out
i'm changing the background to make it
to something different something that
engages people so their brain doesn't
switch off it's okay if you're doing
some kind of meditation video for them
to just float off into the background if
it's a podcast audio then people listen
passively anyway but if you truly want
some kind of retention
where they lean in to the content you
need to keep it eye-catching eye-popping
you need to give them something special
that's why i
like my content that's why i engage with
you that's why i'm much more
handsy
that's just me anyway i taught in my
hands on one of those weirdos retention
is key
get them hook them keep them for as long
as possible even if you promise that you
know there's an eighth tip at the end of
this video that is fantastic that kind
of thing i cards the things that are up
here
i'm pointing somewhere because i'm never
quite sure which direction they happen
to be these are very powerful tools that
are kind of like end screens but
anywhere within your video i could talk
about how to start a youtube channel and
i can
pop up a card as you can see here and it
will direct them to a specific video i
can refer to a specific piece of content
and push them in that direction if they
feel they've got the value out of this
video and they hop over to there or it's
more important for them to watch that
video then they'll hop through the me
fact that's suggested will help you the
fact that it gives them an option that
they will jump from here to another one
of your videos help a session watch time
the session watch time is also important
that if truly
the best option
out of that video is somebody else's
content that's not a negative against
you you've continued that session watch
time if i was to say that a certain
tutorial was so much better than mine
and you should go and check it out right
then that pushes session watch time onto
youtube youtube
grants you
the benefit of that watch time when they
click off and leave another channel they
penalize that channel and not yours so
if you continue to push people wherever
you want it could be with icards
websites it could be downloadable links
it could be playlists it could be videos
whatever you wish use the icast your
advantage because they're there just
don't spam them at every single second
right use them for relevant
videos relevant links downloads that
kind of thing and it can keep session
and retention with you now i know i said
this about retention but longer videos
do truly help if there is something that
you can do in 30 seconds and it doesn't
need more than 30 seconds then fine
i get that but i have master classes on
this channel that teach you how to start
a youtube channel how to get more views
that are 15 20 minutes long the down the
youtube algorithm to in a fine detail so
you get
exponentially more information out of it
those videos have their place too if you
make longer videos then people will
watch for longer but once again you
can't make a 30 second video which is
how to put this screw in a piece of wood
10 minutes long because
that's just
padding so much it's it's not
entertaining it's boring i'm sure jeff
really likes you explaining that this
tungsten screw goes through a certain
thread because it's blur that many
people won't be there's nothing wrong
with making a 10 15 20 minute video if
it truly warrants that 10 15 20 minute
content have a look at people like
vsauce philip defranco roberto blake
lioness tech tips all of these channels
do longer videos that are packed full of
content and entertainment or educational
mr beast is much more
entertainment and his videos are also
over 10 minutes in length and they're
packed and they're powerful he could
have just gone here's the squid game
here's the winner ta-da there's the
money but he doesn't he weaves it into a
story he tells you how it goes
so can you make a longer video with
putting more value inside that explains
it to people pretty much like this video
here live streams this is the thing that
got this channel
like monetized straight off the bat
you've got to imagine that i make a lot
of tutorials on this channel that are
one two three minutes long because i
want to make them as long as they need
to be i don't want to fill them with
fluff these master classes a little bit
different i want to bombard as many
facts into your face as soon as possible
but if you only want to know how to add
in screens i do that in a minute or two
and then i'm gone live streams on the
other hand was a good way for me to push
watch time
basically i would sit there two to three
times a week and i'd sit there with the
camera for a couple of hours and i would
chat and i'd do q a and i would talk
about specific topics i would
effectively record a podcast to the
camera right and these live streams
would help me boost my watch retention
and people would watch me imagine you
are live streaming for an hour and just
five people hop into the live stream
right don't think don't get it twisted
you don't need hundreds of thousands of
people to make it worthwhile all you
need to do is be teaching or educating a
few people right that's why twitch
existed and the audience will grow over
time they get used to oh alan shows up
on a wednesday for a chat right so
if if all of a sudden you're doing an
hour's live stream and you do it with
five people who pop in and out and most
of it they're watching most of it in
itself let's say they watch for half
hour at a time when they jump out and
jump out okay that's two and a half
hours worth of watch time five people
half hour each two and a half hours
worth of watch time
was if i was to do a one minute video
i'd have to get thousands of people to
watch that to get hours of watch time so
live streaming can really jump the watch
time potential of your channel end
screens these are powerful tools that
actually help you grab people from an
engaged video and push them elsewhere so
they can get the most out of growing
their youtube channel by looking at this
video here for example how to start your
youtube channel or how to get more views
see what i did just there come on check
those videos out you'll really love
