After ending 2023 with just one victory from their final four games,
Lille had hit the ground running in the new year with three wins.
Now welcome to Clermont, to a stadium in which they had scored 15 goals already in 2024,
albeit 12 of those coming against Minnow's Golden Lion in the Cup.
That tally of finish all season coming into matchday 20,
though they'd scored three in their past two games to earn themselves four points
and move off the bottom spot.
Lost 100% start to the year, came to an end at the last time out,
and very quickly showed what they could do here with a full complement of 11.
Jonathan David opening the scoring inside 10 minutes.
Brilliant pass from Angel Gomez, and David doing the rest.
A rise, Sir Jonathan of Lille.
It quickly became apparent that this might be a long afternoon for Clermont,
all over the top, sitting Adam Unas away.
Coming back though this time off the upright.
Visitors did though nearly equalise.
Gimal Ebener at the back post.
Benjamin Chevalier doing enough.
The second goal would go with the run of play.
The corner taken short.
Edon Jagrova curling in across from the right flank,
which was definitely flicked on by Benjamin Andre.
Initially ruled out for offside,
but VAR would ensure the correct decision was reached.
Another header for Andre.
Since his top flight debut in 2011, he's scored nine of them,
more than any other Ligue 1 Uber Eats midfielder during that time.
And two quickly became three.
A long ball upfield drew Maury Dior out of his box.
He got there first, but only succeeded in chesting it into the path of David.
He needed no invitation to turn one of his own into two.
Goal number seven of the season quickly followed by number eight.
Still not reaching the heights of last season as yet.
Finding momentum now.
That's six in his last eight league games, as many as in his previous 19.
Two minutes later, it was 4-0.
Jagrova with the pick of the bunch.
Creator, turning finisher.
A beautiful cross for number two,
overshadowed by a stunning strike for number four.
Too much space offered up to Jagrova.
In off the post.
That makes it 19 unmarked goals in just two and a half home games.
A long second half ahead of Pascal Gassien's men.
They may have hoped their hosts would take their feet off the proverbial pedal,
but no such luck.
Vardos clearly in no mood to look ahead to the next game.
And Thiago Santos making his best to one-up Jagrova.
With a good save.
Making amends for that earlier mistake.
Shortly after, denying David from completing his hat-trick.
Despite his error earlier on.
Clermont's keeper did a good job of keeping the scoreline vaguely respectable.
As Lille put no fewer than 13 shots on target.
Second most by any side this season.
And their second highest tally since records began.
4-0 the final score.
And good enough to jump Lidog up to fourth in the table.
Now just one point off the podium.
Clermont slipped back to the bottom of the pile.
