Caitlin Clark has not only broken the all-time NCAA women's scoring record but has also elevated the sport to unprecedented levels. With her sights now set on surpassing Pete Maravich's legendary record for the most points in NCAA college basketball, Clark is redefining the sport.
Here comes Clark. How will she go for history?
Did you see that?
Did you see it?
That shot right there made Caitlin Clark the number one
career score in NCAA women's basketball.
Clark surpassed a previous record.
It was set back in 2017.
The University of Iowa star now has listened to this number
3,569 points.
Wow, and she is still going strong.
Jan Crawford is at the Carver Hawkeye Arena.
That's in Iowa City where you saw Caitlin Blake, break
rather, Kelsey Plum's record.
Lucky you.
I love watching this girl on the court.
Oh, don't we all, Gail?
I mean, listen, it is so quiet in here right now.
But if you were here last night, this place, when she hit
that shot, I mean, it's packed to the rafters.
It erupted 116 decibels as the fans went crazy.
And listen, she didn't make them take, waste any time
for them to see history and she did it.
And of course, the most Caitlin Clark kind of way.
Here comes Clark.
How will she go for history?
It took her two minutes and 12 seconds.
Caitlin Clark, once again, made the historic same routine,
breaking the record with the logo shot that's become her
signature.
And of course, she didn't stop there.
Scoring 23 points in the first quarter, en route to a career
high 49 point masterpiece.
It's pretty unreal.
This crowd's unreal.
I'm just really grateful, honestly, to be able to be here
and like make so many of my dreams come true.
Maybe we should have seen it coming.
Her competitive fire sparked when she was just a kid dunking
on a mini hoop in West Des Moines.
For high school coach, Kristen Meyer, it didn't take long
to see Clark was special.
I knew she was a different type of talent than I had been
around before.
She wants to win all the time.
Highly recruited, Clark decided to stay close to home and
rewrite the record books at Iowa.
When she steps on the floor, there's not a doubt in her mind
that she's the very best, but she's earned those moments
how hard she works.
Known for her epic shooting and no-look passes, Clark's
dynamic style of play has helped Iowa sell out arenas home
and away.
And the mark of a great player is making those around you
better.
She has more than a thousand assists.
Clark races away.
Last year, she led the Hawkeyes to their first NCAA championship
game.
As she helps lead a women's basketball boom, inspiring countless
young girls with their own mini hoops who cheer for Clark
with jubilation and awe.
What would six-year-old Kaitlyn Clark think of you, 22-year-old
Kaitlyn Clark?
They would pinch myself to like make me wake up from this
dream and my six-year-old self would maybe not be surprised,
maybe be surprised at the magnitude that I'm on right now,
but proud of the way I've worked for this more than anything.
And Clark, I mean, she may not be done breaking records.
She just needs 98 points to break Pistol Pete Maravich's
record. That would be for all of Division 1 basketball men
and women. That record has stood 54 years, guys.
And we know she can do that if she decides she's going to
stay. Don't you think, Jan?
She can do it this year.
Now, that was what the crowd was saying last night, though,
when the confetti, she could do it this year.
But you know, the confetti is coming down in this crowd.
The crowd's going, one more year, one more year.
Obviously, they want her to come back.
Well, we know, Jan, that you are a women's, a college women's
basketball mom because you know this game very well.
I am.
Your daughter plays, George Mason.
What's this like for you?
I think it's exciting.
I have no skin in this game whatsoever.
What's it like for you?
Well, I mean, just watching basketball with my daughter
since they were little and then seeing the outpouring of
support and really how the game is growing and viewership
and attendance and listening to, you know, these players
interact with the fans and they can see it.
These little girls coming out with their posters.
These are superstars.
I said it was loud in here like a rock concert, but the players
Kaitlyn Clark and all these other teams, they are idols and
icons to these young girls, inspiring a next generation.
And I mean, what more could you ask for, Gail?
Yes, and the boys are watching too.
Like that too.
Boys are watching too.
Thank you, Jan.
