Hallo Hallo
When you have finally graduated
become a grown-up in the society
Isn't it a great feeling?
We don't have to write thesis anymore
We don't have to go to class anymore
The next key issue is probably finding a job
Job hunting is a very realistic issue
What I want to share with you today is
As an expatriate
My first job in the Netherlands
I am Little Cloud
I'm here to share knowledge of daily life
personal experiences, growth and learn
and tips integrating into foreign country life on a weekly basis
When I first started looking for a job in the Netherlands
I wanted to find some big multinational companies
So my first job in the Netherlands
I worked for an Italian telecommunication company
I travelled a lot to and from Italy
The starting salary was about three times higher than in M'sia
You may be asking
Do I need to make it sound so good?
Yes, because that's the only way to show the difference
between the end result and what had actually happened in reality
Can you imagine how big the difference is?
The reality of my situation is
I've been looking for a job for months
It was a really difficult process
Either I got rejected at the first interview
or I got a second interview
and then being rejected again
Or I didn't even get an interview
At that time
I was rejected till I started to doubt my life
At that time, my idea of finding a job
was still rather naive
I wanted to work in a large multinational company
With not much work experience
My first choice was
Heineken, Akzo, Nobel, ABN, Amro, etc
Those large companies
after reading their requirements
and submitted my resume multiple times
I was dissuaded from
only wanted to work in large multinational companies
because I kept receiving job rejection emails
I didn't even get an interview at that time
It was a big blow to my self-confidence
After that I started looking for smaller companies
like some holding companies in the Netherlands
They were here because of the Dutch CIT benefits
so they set up an office here
But unfortunately
No matter how many times I submitted my CV
I was still not blessed by the gods of luck
In the meantime
I received either a rejection email
or I had an interview
but I was rejected at the first interview
Anyway, I was in a pretty bad situation
When I first started looking for a job, I was very confident
And I was a little bit arrogant
I don't know where I got that confidence from at that time
I felt good about myself in all aspects
So when I was putting in my resume
I would make sure that I was applying for the kind of jobs
If I was lucky enough to be accepted
I would be willing to do the job
It was a completely redundant thought
I soon realised that this was not the way to go
Because a month and a half later
I still hadn't found a job
Then I started to broaden my search
I didn't limit my search from any location
Any city in the Netherlands would do
I applied to all the companies that I could submit my CV
But this change
didn't bring me any good news
After two or three months
I still hadn't received any offer from any companies
I started to get very anxious and panicky
I started to ask myself how could this happen?
And then I just started submitting my resume around
It didn't matter what industry or what position
It didn't matter if it was related to my degree
I put in all of them
It just came to to the point that
It didn't matter what job or what position
As long as you accept me
I'll take it all
I just want a job
In fact, two months into my job search
I got nervous breakdown
I was very depressed
I went from being very confident
to the point where I started to doubt myself
I would think
Did I write my CV wrong?
Is it because I didn't write it well enough?
Is it because I don't have enough work experience?
Is it because I don't speak Dutch?
I spoke broken Dutch at that time
I was just thinking about it all the time
I found all sorts of reasons for myself
By the end of the fourth month
I still hadn't found a job
My mind became completely negative
Every morning
I was ready for the disappointment of the day
Every day I turned on my laptop with no goal in mind
I kept putting in my resume
I treat it as my daily routine
It was a very bad feeling to be honest
I was in a very low mood every day
I remember
I was in my fifth month of job hunting
only then I started to re-examine myself
What I really wanted
Which direction I wanted to go
Once I had these two things figured out
the first thing I did was to revise my CV
and then focus on jobs that were related to my degree
and also from the bottom of the ladder
I started applying for jobs again
In my sixth month of job hunting
I started to get more interviews
I didn't really think much of it at that point
Because of all the previous failures
In subsequent interviews
I just didn't put any expectation
When the interviewer asked me questions and opinions
I just blurted them out
Maybe because I wasn't expecting too much
I was not that nervous
At that time
I was approaching every interview with an easy mind
Even so, during that time
I was still getting rejections
It took me 7 months to get my first job in the Netherlands
At the seventh month
I was lucky enough to be accepted by a company
I remember during the interview
When they were introducing their company
They told me they were a multinational company
headquarter based in Italy
I would need to travel to and from Italy from time to time
would this be a problem for me?
I'm sure you can guess my answer
Of course I said no problem at all
For someone who has been looking for a job for so long
I couldn't have asked for anything more
The day after the interview
I received my job offer letter
I can still remember how I felt
I was overwhelmed with emotion
I worked there for five years
Then I moved to a Dutch multinational organisation
After that I moved to an American multinational organisation
After the first job
It's inevitable that we will change jobs
But the important thing is that when we change jobs
Did we take something with us?
Did we learn anything there?
Or was it just a waste of time?
The main thing I want to share with you today is
What may seem like a very well planned life
Often we just have only a direction
The so-called opportunity
It's just a chance encounter in these directions
I hope that I can encourage those of you
who are still looking for a job
or confused in life
In fact, you are not alone
Because most people are the same
In real life
There's really no such thing as a smooth sailing story
So if your life isn't going as well as you'd hoped
You can really relax and not stress about it
Maybe if you make a turn
you'll see the light at the end of the tunnel
Please believe me
We're all bound to see the point of perseverance one day
I hope you all find
A first job that you love
Well, that's all for today
what's your first job?
how was the work experience? good or bad?
