Scientists have recently discovered four geckos' breeding areas in the South Pole,
revealing the interesting lives of these South Pole residents.
The cold South Pole is freezing.
A gecko happily jumped out of the water,
rubbed the ice with its belly,
and moved quickly on the ice with its wings and legs.
The adult gecko is 1.2 meters tall and weighs more than 45 kilograms.
It is the largest gecko on the coldest earth.
These unflying birds have always been the main subject of research by scientists.
Looking for the movements of colonies,
we managed to find these four new breeding sites,
which have always existed, but we've never spotted them before.
The research team uses medium-precision satellite images to track the geckos' migration.
When they see brown blocks,
the researchers will retrieve high-precision satellite images to determine the gecko group.
Geckos live in groups.
They feed in the sea from January to March every year,
and move to the breeding area from April to May.
From May to June,
the gecko will give a baby to the male gecko for hatching,
and it will return to the sea to feed.
When the gecko is full,
two months have passed,
and the male gecko can go out to fill its stomach.
By December,
the parents of the gecko can take their baby out to sea.
Before the geckos' feathers grow,
once the ice breaks,
the babies will freeze to death.
So the adult geckos will observe the condition of the ice,
and choose the safest place to breed.
Scientists have discovered 66 breeding areas for geckos.
At present, the number of wild geckos is less than 300,000.
