It's Mark Wiens, I am in Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam,
and I am on my way to go find Banh Mi,
which is the famous Vietnamese baguette sandwich.
Bonjour.
Yes, chili, please.
Okay, I got my Banh Mi, and they are really friendly.
All of the family that owns that are really friendly.
The sandwich looks amazing.
I got the Banh Mi with pork,
and I guess a bunch of other things,
so I'm gonna unwrap it right now.
Oh, they even have a company toothpick included.
Oh, I'll save that for later.
And then it's always wrapped in a rubber band.
Pick up the rubber band, and open up the paper.
Oh, let's just take a peek inside real fast.
Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
Okay, so it includes, looks like there's a bunch of pate,
and then I got, I don't know,
I guess this is the pork floss, like pork, shredded pork,
and there should be like pieces of pork in there as well,
plus a bunch of pickles and cucumber,
and then sauce and chili and mayonnaise all in there.
Oh, okay, there, I see it hiding
underneath the layer of pate and mayonnaise,
is like, it almost looks like bologna,
and, oh, look at that bread.
Ying, fresh bread, Ying,
look at that fresh bread right there.
A bunch of fresh bread, I can still hear it sizzling,
and I can actually feel the heat coming off of it.
There's like 12 layers to the sandwich,
and just beautiful colors.
All right, so there's no tables at this restaurant,
so you just order for takeaway,
and then you, well, I'm gonna eat it immediately.
I can't wait.
That is a winning sandwich.
The bread is so fluffy and crispy on the outside,
and then that mix of meat is so good.
It tastes like bologna, roasted pork,
and then that rich, buttery pate,
and then paired with the green onions
and the pickled daikon radish and carrots.
Oh, and then you get a hit of coriander,
cilantro at the end, that's awesome.
Mm, mm, it tastes so fresh,
and so, the bread is so crispy,
and then that rich meat paired with the vegetables,
that's marvelous.
I'm approaching the bottom of my sandwich,
just a few bites left.
It has been delightful,
and this is a great place to have banh mi in Saigon,
but really, you can find banh mi all over
at probably thousands of street food stalls
throughout this city.
It is everywhere.
It's so good.
This is a great place.
One thing I really love about banh mi
is just the contrast of textures and flavors.
So, it's a really crusty loaf,
but then the meat as well as the inside of the bread
is really soft and pillowy,
and then you've got also the crispy vegetables,
the carrots, the pickles, the coriander, the green onions.
I added some chili, so it has a bit of a chili kick to it,
plus all those fresh vegetables and herbs.
This is such a glorious sandwich in the world.
So good.
