Weekly series promoting wildlife and environmental issues using photographs, videos and slide shows in the hope that some people may benefit from my experience as a professional photographer for more than 30 years. During this time I have published two wildlife photo books, most recently From Sunrise To Sunshine, which contains more than 150 of my Maasai Mara safari photographs, 40 of which have won awards, including two from Natures Best, sponsored by the Smithsonian. I was Irish Professional Wildlife Photographer of the Year in 2017.

good morning everybody or good afternoon
or evening or whatever it might be in
your part of the
world but here we are in January
2024 it's hard to believe it's almost
the end of January already already so
just in case I didn't already do this
happy New
Year yeah
2024 I wonder what this year holds
anyway this is going to be a short
Wildlife Wednesday and by the way I
apologize for doing the intro from
inside the house this week because uh
I'm kind of stuck indoors at the moment
I'm only getting out occasionally
because I've have a little bit of a
nerve problem that's causing me me
problems when I walk but anyway that's
another story for another day I won't
bore you with that so why am I dealing a
wildlife Wednesday this week well
there's been an influx of wax wings in
Ireland over the last couple of weeks
and unfortunately because of the fact
that I'm stuck indoors I'm not getting
out to see them they're an absolutely
beautiful bir that come to us during the
winter from Scandinavia now they don't
come every year but they're fairly
regular visitors I think the last time
they were here was maybe five or six
years seven years ago I'm not quite sure
must check that actually but they do
come to Ireland when the berries run out
in their Homeland now they're basically
Scandinavian
birds and I'm going to read this time
from a little bit of boardwatch irelands
information to make sure that I don't
get things wrong when Berry supplies in
their usual wintering countries are
exhausted prematurely something which
can often happen during good waxwing
breeding season these birds will travel
South in search of
food and that's what's happened over the
last couple of
weeks but unfortunately as I said I
haven't been able to get out and about
and see them but I know some friends
have seen them they've been well
photographed they've been well well
documented in newspapers and
magazines so there are quite a few of
them around funny enough few years ago
and one of those famous waxwing Winters
if you like to call them that there was
a tree down the end of the road
here and a a fair flock of them I can't
remember exactly how many I think about
30 of them came in and they stayed for
about a week it was great I got some
terrific shots at the time I I also
remember oh I think it was back around
2012
2013 when they uh spent a lot of time
out in fingas I remember and I got quite
a few shots there but more recently
again I remember them being in luuk and
I was reminded of this yesterday by a
friend who was out lucky enough to be
out photographing while I was sitting
here at home anyway so for this week
just to give you an idea of just how
beautiful these Brees are I'm going to
give you look at some photos that I took
over a couple of
periods not sure 2013 26 17 whatever it
doesn't
matter just that you see the beauty of
these birds let's have a look at the
