The Khmer Empire Part 4 | Fall of Angkor - End of an Empire | Timeless Discoveries
"In exile in the Kingdom of Champa, the aging Prince Jaya Varman hears of the devastation in Angkor. He returns to a burned and desolate land, but the people crown him Jayavarman the 7th. Jayavarman, once a pacifist, transforms into a warrior to expel Champa invaders.
After reclaiming Angkor, Jayavarman rebuilds the capital, creating the magnificent Angkor Thom. He shifts the state religion to Buddhism, ushering in a non-violent revolution. However, his successor's inconsistency in religious policies leads to a collapse in trust.
The rise of Theravada Buddhism contributes to the fall of the God Kings. The climate becomes a factor, with droughts and floods stressing Angkor's water system. The city's decline accelerates as maintenance dwindles, diseases spread, and nature reclaims the once-majestic temples.
By 1431, the Thai conquer Angkor after a seven-month siege. The Khmer move their capital south, marking the end of Angkor's golden era. The city falls into ruin, enveloped by jungle, as banyan trees strangle its temples. The abandonment of Angkor becomes a poignant reminder of the challenges societies face – inequality, climate variability, and the fragility of civilizations.
