We are going to the Albert Kuyp market. Let's go.
Wait for the tram. Always waiting. Always waiting for the tram. Always.
It's delayed.
We're at the Albert Kuyp market. Yes we are. Do you know who Albert Kuyp was?
Um, you told me that he was a painter. Oh, you spoiled it. No.
He was a painter in the 17th century. Wow. What did he paint?
He was famous for like river scenes and landscape paintings here in the
Netherlands. That makes sense. Yeah.
So they named a street and then a market after Albert Kuyp.
So this market's open six days a week. Closed on Sundays.
They claim that they're the largest outdoor daytime market in
Europe. A lot of like specific things.
And a lot of the sites say they claim it. So it may not be true.
There are over 260 stalls here. Allegedly. Allegedly. I have not counted them.
And the pandemic may have killed a couple. I feel like it's mostly back.
I think people are back. It seems like it. We're here on a Saturday.
In February. Well, in February. Yeah. So still an off season,
but I think there's probably a lot more locals here. Maybe. All right.
Off to get some, uh, kibbling and raw herring, right? Yeah,
you do that and I'm going to get some stroke waffles and some Popper J's,
little pancakes. Sounds better.
I want to address the raw fish in the room here.
The Dutch really like this raw herring.
It's actually got some vinegar on it of some sort. So it's not totally raw.
I guess we don't really eat a lot of seafood.
So we're certainly not going to eat mostly raw fish for you with onions and
pickles on it. But it's a thing. People love it. I can't, I refuse.
We'll have to have a bet someday and whoever loses,
hopefully Katrina will have to eat raw herring, but I can't do it, but it's here.
They seem to have a war here going on about the best chicken.
They both are claiming best. Hmm.
So we've got Benny's on the left and Chris on the right.
Where do we go for chicken? You're the chicken person. So what do you,
what sounds good to you? I don't know. That's the best apparently. Okay,
well why don't we get both? That is also the best.
Apparently Benny's chicken logo looks a little crazy.
That chicken looks like you might have rabies and this chicken looks
sophisticated and two dimensional.
It looks more like a rooster to me than a chicken. We don't eat rooster, do we?
I don't. We want to get a satay.
So chicken satay. Where did we end up? We went to Chris. Chris.
Um, it's been reheated. Chicken on a stick.
We opted for no peanut sauce. I'm not a huge peanut sauce fan.
Some are not my thing. It's good.
It's a little chewy. It needs something.
Probably some peanut sauce or Sriracha. I like it. I like chicken.
I think I've documented that on this show. I like white meat chicken.
That's white meat chicken. Steamy, hot. I needed lunch. This is good.
The more I eat it, the more I like it. It's actually,
there's the right amount of salt on it,
which people mess that up on chicken sometimes. This is what I needed.
This is a good quick lunch. Chris's Kip.
Yes.
All right. This is the satay from Benny's chicken. Next door to Chris's.
Benny's says they're the best chicken. Chris also says they're the best chicken.
A lot of best. This might be dark meat.
It's that weird thing when they've,
they've soaked it and marinated it in something.
So I can't even tell if it's dark or white meat. Definitely dark meat.
So it's not my favorite right off the bat. The flavor is really good though.
It is hot. I would give the edge on flavor to this one, to Benny's.
Chris's is the one I would buy over and over cause it's white meat.
So I'm kind of torn here. I think both are, both are good.
Maybe both are the best.
I think this one is my favorite actually. I like dark meat though.
And it just seems to have like more flavor to it.
Maybe the marinade or whatever you were talking about has helped with that too.
But this is probably the one that I would say is the best of the best.
Now time to get some french fries.
Because no food outing would be complete without some crispy hot potatoes.
Can I just say though,
I still hate how they put the sauce right on top of the fries.
Like it's just like on top.
This is number one. Now what about all the fries down here?
And then this one is like drenched in ketchup. So just minor annoyance.
These are good. They are good. They're hot.
Do you think they're better than the best fries in Amsterdam that we had?
Man, I want to say they are because they're so much nicer here than at Mannequin Piss.
But no, I think the Mannequin Piss ones are probably better. Oh, they're hot.
They're double fried. That's the secret here.
Cause you fry them, you let them sit out until somebody orders them,
These might be better. What? I don't know. I don't think so,
but they're really good and they're what I have right now. Oh man, burned my mouth.
This market is so big. We've walked the whole length of it now.
Gigantic. Something for everybody, not just food,
but we've been watching our videos for a while. You know,
really care about his food. We're here for the food. Yeah.
You can buy houseware. Houseware. What's houseware? Housewares.
You can buy that, right? You can buy junk. You can get a teapot.
You can get a cheap fake gold ring, a fur coat,
which may or may not be real.
Looks like some textiles, some generic textiles. Phone charger.
Lots of phone chargers. It's like a market. Everything's there.
There's like raw meats to cook. Right. Like butcher shops. Fish.
Lots of fish. Lots of fish. There's fruit stands. Okay. Oh no, not this.
We first saw this, I think when we were up in like Finland or something.
And then it's like slowly making its way down here. You see this lid?
Stays on here, which seems like a good invention. It's good for the environment.
Keeps all the litter together.
This should be in black and white. Like the infomercials.
Like do you have problems drinking out of a soda?
So then I usually just have him rip them off for me. But you're right.
Better for the environment. So that's all good. Plastic bottles are bad in general.
Hey, look at how far down the ketchup went actually. So we've,
we've had a stroopwafel, which will be on the stroopwafel video.
And maybe we'll show you a little bit of it here.
So look at this beauty. Caramel like everywhere.
I love this. What else are we going to have here at the Albuquerque market today?
10 euros is pretty good for one of these scarves. This is really pretty.
And American cookies. And a white chocolate croffle.
For like the last two weeks, I've been craving a cinnamon roll.
And although this is probably not going to satisfy that itch, it's pretty close.
So I stumbled upon these little cute cinnamon rolls at this bakery over here.
Why is the frosting not melted?
That's my question.
If you put it in the oven, it should be melty and it's not.
It's like flaking off. So it's dry as ****. Careful on the frosting.
That like broke my tooth. That was insane.
No, it just sounded like it. Yeah. Okay. Surely it's a middle.
It has potential. I wanted it to be more like a cinnabon.
The search continues for the cinnamon roll.
Years ago here at the Albuquerque market, they had these giant coconut balls.
They're huge. And I don't know that they're here anymore.
They did have small ones at this bakery. So I got a white chocolate cocoa ball.
It's just mostly solid coconut.
Katrina is not a big coconut fan, but I love it. It's really good.
I'm a big fan of coconut things. And this is very, very high quality. Wow.
I don't know if I like the white chocolate.
I probably should have got a different flavor.
I was going to get the lemon curd one, but it had a giant vegan thing across it.
It scared me off. I don't know what's not vegan about. Oh, chocolate.
Time for some churros.
We just walked right next door and see how this turns out.
The traditional Dutch treats of churros.
It does say Spanish churro here, so they are, you know, calling out Spanish.
Are churros from Spain or Mexico originally?
Don't know. Disneyland?
Tastes more like a funnel cake.
Where were we? We had those really bad churros.
Do you remember that? I do. We were in Tenerife.
Tenerife. Yeah.
Yeah.
It is very boring,
but that's why you edit it with all sorts of cool little things.
Dozens of YouTube views. Can't be wrong.
We just got told we're boring by the bakery guy.
What do you think? White or the orange and yellow?
Orange and yellow. Okay.
I can buy myself flowers, but I didn't buy them for myself.
Dutch black licorice is a thing. I like it. Katrina can't stand it,
but we're going to get a little bit of licorice. It's called drop in Dutch.
D-R-O-P. Drop. There's a bunch of different types here.
I may screw this up and get the wrong kinds because there are flavors that I
don't like either, but let's give it a whirl.
Is this self-serve? If you want, sure. I think I do.
I like these. These are school crates.
Thank you. I like these a lot.
Double soju. Oh no, I don't want that. I actually probably like these.
These are sweet. I'll get these. I'm just trying to buy her some candy,
but you know. Oh, I'm alive.
I want to try the one that she said was the best. Let's try.
So this is a black version of this candy that I like. They're really hard.
Probably sitting out here in the cold. Oh yeah, that's really good.
Black licorice is one of those things when you're a kid, it's like you hate it.
And then some people at some point in their life just go, that's not bad.
I had that moment. Katrina's not had that moment. Oh yeah, that's really good.
She was right.
Okay. So because I like all the sweet treats here,
we had to get some Poffer J's, which are like little mini pancakes,
little Dutch pancakes that they have at bakeries and at this market.
You can get them with all kinds of stuff like chocolate, Nutella,
strawberries. I saw him putting Disaronno almond liqueur on top of them too.
So wide variety of different types of things.
And these are very Dutch and I love them.
There was also a pad of butter underneath this.
So he made them fresh and hot and put them on top of the butter.
And now as you can see, the butter has completely melted. So low in calorie.
I would put some maple syrup on these as well.
Powdered sugar everywhere,
but these are probably one of my most favorite treats here.
We have eaten the Halbert Kyve market. Oh God. Yeah.
That's our new friend.
People lose their ******* minds when they see a camera. Like, Oh my God.
What was your favorite thing today? All the people waving behind the camera.
Probably the Poffer J's and I know you didn't care for them too much,
but I liked them. What was your favorite?
Probably the first chicken actually.
Chris's Kip and the drop is pretty good. Halbert Kyve market.
Come check it out. You can eat all day. There's so much other food here.
Kind of endless options here. It's cool though. I mean,
you got to come check it out if you are in Amsterdam.
Do it. Do it now.
