Yeah, a little.
Today I'm in Japan to meet Mo,
who is globally known as Kimono Mom,
who loves sharing her love for Japanese home cooking.
Her simple and accessible recipes
are loved by millions of people worldwide.
So I came to Japan to meet her family
and get a bit of an idea of a typical Japanese home
and a delicious meal.
Thank you for having us!
It's Kimono Mom!
You look great too!
Because when you came to UAE, you were dressed,
so I said, I've come to Japan, I'll dress the same.
Yeah, arigatou gozaimasu!
Thank you for having us!
Wow, I see the social media set up here.
All the stuff.
Really cool.
I know, I can't believe I'm in Japan.
It's so beautiful.
I've fallen in love with this city.
How are you, famous person?
We all know you.
We see you in the videos.
So for those who don't know,
Kimono Mom burst onto the scene
sharing Japanese culture,
Japanese cooking with her beautiful family,
all around the world.
In February, she came to Dubai.
We met her there for the first time.
She came to the office with her beautiful family.
She had so much beautiful energy.
So many people went to see her.
And she's doing a beautiful job
of just sharing this beautiful Japanese culture
with her beautiful family to the world.
So we've come to Japan to repay the visit.
She came to Dubai, saw us,
we came to Japan to see her
and get a bit of an idea of a typical Japanese home
and have a beautiful Japanese meal.
Inshallah.
Ooh, nice.
I always feel happy when I present
and then you have another YouTuber who goes,
oh, yeah, yeah.
So what are we going to do today?
Let's do a tea party first.
Tea party?
Oh, yeah.
Here we're having traditional Japanese tea.
Here we have Mo from Kimono Mom
making us a matcha,
traditional Japanese tea ceremony.
This is my first in Japan, actually.
I haven't had it since we arrived.
Matcha is very delicious.
And do you have it every day?
Yes.
Really?
So you don't drink coffee?
Yeah, I love coffee too.
So what do you have first?
The matcha or the coffee?
Matcha, matcha first.
Or wait, I have an idea.
Do you ever get the matcha and the coffee together?
That is too strong.
That would be a lot to handle.
Oh, yeah.
This is when you wait until it bubbles up.
Final product.
A date.
Yes.
Thank you.
From Dubai?
You got this?
I had dates for the first time in Dubai.
Oh, really?
And you love them now?
Alhamdulillah.
Bismillah.
The date is very good.
That is bitter.
Oh, very bitter, huh?
Yeah, yeah.
That's why we eat.
Sweet with it.
The thing about matcha,
it will wake you up in the morning.
Like you are,
hello, good morning, Tokyo.
We're here.
That's what this does to you.
I love it.
What are we cooking for lunch today?
Today we'll make oyakodon.
Mother and child.
Oh, you know.
Why?
Sugoi.
See?
All of them are looking at me.
If you see that,
they're all shocked.
I know the Japanese culture.
So, apparently, it's a rice dish.
It's called the mother and the child
because they make the chicken and the egg.
I'm officially part of the Kimono Mom family.
Today we're going to be cooking
hurangon.
Oyakodon.
We're going to be cooking oyakodon.
And I just want to say konnichiwa.
So the first job Mo has given me
is to cut the onions.
Let's do it.
Yeah, but like,
onions are the worst part of the cooking.
Oh, yeah.
It's the hardest part.
Do you cook in video before?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Biryani.
Oh, biryani.
Nice.
So cutting onions is an art.
I can even do it without...
I feel that this is one of the best ways
to learn about a culture
is through their food.
Like, obviously coming to someone's home,
seeing how they cook,
seeing how they live,
it's just an eye into, you know, their lives.
And then you just see how similar
our lives are, too.
Like, here,
like, the comfort food is
rice, chicken, and egg.
Like, for us, growing up,
our comfort food was chicken and rice.
In India, it's like biryani.
It's like a comfort food.
Chicken and rice.
It's like an international comfort food.
Okay, here we have the soy sauce.
Yes, this is mom's sauce.
I would like to say that
Kimono Mom has
merch.
Which is the original umami sauce.
Now, it is gluten-free,
vegan,
non-alcoholic,
halal,
Muslim-friendly,
and no MSG.
You got the good stuff here.
Wow.
So, ingredients so far.
Onions,
100 ml of the original umami sauce
by Kimono Mom,
and 300 ml of water.
Fancy.
We looked for halal chicken today.
Yeah.
So, yeah.
She's amazing.
She knew we were coming today,
and they went out of their way
to get halal chicken.
And it's not easy to find halal here, huh?
Yeah, in Japan.
It's difficult.
It's not like,
you have to find the halal market.
And it's available in city centers.
We're just outside the city,
like, 40 minutes outside of the city center.
So, for her to be able to go
and find halal chicken,
here we have the halal chicken.
That's very thoughtful of you.
Thank you so much.
Really, really, really thoughtful.
We've all been kicked out of the kitchen.
Even the Kimono Mom team
has also been kicked out
as Sutan-san
is going to be doing her infamous egg crack.
But we sneakily kept one camera there
capturing everything.
We bamboozled them.
For the content.
You have to take it off.
You ruined it.
She saw you, Nathan.
After the complete failure
of the famous egg crack,
we had to move on.
So I decided to crack that egg.
Good egg cracker.
I've been called a lot of good things in my life,
but a good egg cracker?
I'll take it.
We cook the egg
in the oyakodon pan.
Inside?
All around?
Yeah, around.
Oh, I'm sorry.
It's okay, it's okay.
I'm sorry.
It's okay.
I don't know what I'm doing.
Just mix.
Mix all of it?
Yeah, just one time.
I don't want to ruin it.
Okay.
Ah, okay, okay.
It's okay.
It doesn't do it anymore.
You had your chance,
and you ruined it.
Now we're going to start serving.
So we have rice,
three scoops.
One,
two,
and three.
This is an oyakodon pan,
so each individual serving
is made on this pan
and then put on top of the rice.
So the whole thing is cooked,
but each individual's meal
is cooked separately.
Yay!
We did it!
Finally!
I made my first ever oyakodon
from scratch,
just me by myself.
Yeah.
Nobody helped me.
I did it just me.
This is the comfort food.
This is the food,
if you don't know what you want to eat,
you have this.
Bismillah.
How is it?
Very good.
I did it.
Yay!
The halal chicken is delicious.
I'm a big believer in the simple foods.
The simpler the food,
the better.
He's asking me to rank this meal.
How much out of 10?
10.
Because it's made with love.
Any home-cooked meal
is always made with love.
We'll always get a 10 out of 10.
So now that we've eaten,
it wouldn't be right
to come and visit kimono mom
without wearing a kimono.
It looks good on you.
You look like a samurai.
Oh, the Japanese belt.
Got it.
Oh, there's another jacket on top of it all.
I didn't know it was double layered.
Here we go.
Thank you.
