"In life and especially in art, baroque (French: baroque, Italian: barocco) means the wilful and peculiar, which, arising from the idiosyncratic ideas of the individual, offends against general and natural views and turns into the incongruous and comical, without such an effect being intended. A certain kind of genius cannot be denied to the baroque under certain circumstances, but only a confused one, which lacks clarity and organisation, so that it does not achieve unity. This characteristic manifests itself in the music through an accumulation of sought-after, difficult-to-find progressions in the melody, through overloading the harmony with unrhymed chord sequences, hasty and striking modulations, also excessive use of dissonances, irregularity and distortion of the rhythm, arbitrary combination of heterogeneous timbres, and so on. The baroque therefore coincides with the bizarre, if one does not want to regard it as the higher degree of the strange and as that which stands out through overload, unnaturalness, colourfulness and confusion of the composition and evokes the impression of the foolish."
