Truck Camping in Cold Weather - No Power & Locked Gates

All right y'all, well the electrical is not working. None of the electric outlets work. I've
checked these three right here and I'm really, to be honest, I'm really not prepared to stay
the night in here tonight. As cold as it's going to get without a heater. I have the propane one
but I did not bring my heavy sleeping bag with me because I expected to have electricity here.
Looks like there's a main box up there. Maybe I should go check that.
Because I don't believe the electricity is supposed to be shut off here. Let's go check it out.
Yeah I'm already cold. I expected to be nice and warm in here tonight.
I don't know if there's anything I'm gonna be able to do with this.
It's humming. It ain't showing nothing. Oh there we go. Is it on? Like
these all say they're on. Main is off. I mean I could turn it on. I don't know if that's exactly
legal though. Yeah it's off there and off there and honestly there's probably, you gotta probably
do these in order or something but damn. I don't know why the power shut off. There's a guy here
fishing. I'm gonna go ask him. All right well I'm about to lose all my sunlight over here.
I talked to, there's a guy here that was he was fishing. He was walking back up to his truck
and he said he didn't know anything but he's like I don't think it'd be a problem if you turned it
back on. But then I found the phone number. This is an NRD lake. It's not a state lake.
I found the phone number for the NRD and it's still early enough. It's 4 15 but I guess you
guys probably can't tell very well but it's getting darker out here. Less than an hour of
light left at this point. Anyways called the NRD. The lady said yeah they shut it off December 1st.
There's nothing out here explaining that. It doesn't show that when you pull up any of their
Facebook or any of their web pages or anything. So that's super annoying. So the other guy
recommended a spot that's like 15 minutes away and there's a campground there and the NRD lady
said she wasn't sure if the electricity was going to be on because it's outside of their
district. So I'm going to get my junk packed up quick. Get this off of the ramps and we'll run
over there. It's just going to be dark no matter what we do at this point. But we'll see if that
has electricity. If not I guess we might be SOL but we'll give it a shot. And this place was pretty
nice too. I wanted to... there's a trail all the way around here but I'd really prefer to have heat
especially with those windows not having any curtains put up yet. It's going to be cold in
there no matter what. Like even with the heater those big four glass panels just suck the heat
out of there right away. So yeah 15 minutes. In a quarter mile make a u-turn. Camping closes on
Sunday October 22nd. That is a bummer. I don't know where I'm going to go now. The sun's going down right
there. There's another spot. It's an hour away so it's going to be black. It's going to be pitch
black by the time we get there. Oh this is a bummer. I'm surprised they have the gates closed. Like you
can't even go in there. All right well I'll see you guys when we get there I guess.
All right we've made it.
I know you guys can't see me. Let me get this plugged in make sure it works.
We've got power. All right let me grab a light. Well we made it. As you guys can see it's
getting getting pretty dark out. I'm surprised that there is a little bit of light left. Let me
get this all figured out. Definitely a change of plans for this evening but
it's no big deal right? All right well
as much as I would like to have a campfire right now I don't think I'm going to start
one this late. I mean it's not super late but it is already dark. It's six o'clock.
Well I don't know about dinner tonight. My whole uh my whole plan got kind of jacked up by that
stuff not having electricity. I know that I should I should have my heavier bag in here tonight.
I thought about it when I left the house today and I was just like eh well I know where I'm going
I'll be able to plug in at. So I didn't change anything out but uh trying to spend the night
in here tonight without having a heat. Which why don't I get that turned on. There we go.
Uh without having heat would not have been a good idea. Uh give you a temp check here.
It's currently 33 degrees. It feels like 27 and there's a low of 25 tonight. So I mean I
probably wouldn't have died but I wouldn't have got very good sleep or anything. We're good with
some electricity tonight. We need to get this thing all finished up and then get everything done
and all that nonsense. But I think it's just going to be a night of chilling in the truck.
There was a historical thing over in that area of the state that I wanted to check out but
I backtracked about an hour and a half. So we won't be checking that out in the morning. That's
what the plan was. So I'm just gonna get my junk set up and I guess relax for a minute
since I've been on the road double time today. Yeah probably get my pajama pants thrown on.
All right well considering the turn of events this evening I think I'm gonna watch a movie before
I do anything else. So we're not chilling around the fire but I didn't think there was any reason
to start one this late. And there's actually, it's a longer movie that I want to watch. Netflix
just released a new one and it's kind of gone viral and or maybe it's got a little bit of viral
but it's got I guess a pretty controversial ending. Let me grab a beer though. We got something
different. Check that out. So it's a Grolsch Premium Pilsner and it's got the little flip top
thing on there. I actually have the box in there. Why don't I see if it says anything?
It only came in a four pack. Yeah there's some writing on it. We gotta read that right.
See what it's all about. And I gotta get my lights set up in here. I gotta get
pushing on this thing. Brewed and bottled by Grolsch
in Holland. It's imported into Washington DC and it says Grolsch has been brewed in the
Netherlands for 400 years. Our Pilsner is brewed for refreshment and greater depth of flavor.
Perfectly blending malted barley in two hops. One for aroma, one for bitterness,
and it creates our famous taste. So that's that's it.
Yeah like I said it came in a four pack. Let's stick these back in there.
Let's see what this is all about. So the movie's called uh gosh something about it's it's like a
it's like a post-apocalyptic or apocalypse type movie.
I don't even know how to open this honestly. Yeah I don't know if I've ever drank a beer that's got
a top like that on it. So you must like pop it that way. There we go. Oh dude check that out.
It's in the glass. That's rad. Oh it's a little fuzzy. All right so the Netflix movie is called
Leave the World Behind. Of course I cannot see the description on there. I'll have to
look it up on the internets. It's a crisp crisp beer. I mean it's just a good that's just a good
basic beer. It's like a light beer for sure. That's tasty dude. And they think these cans
these bottles are a little bit bigger than normal. I don't know if it says on here.
15.2 fluid ounces five percent alcohol. So it's a 15.2 ounce bottle.
All right enough distractions. So this is off Google. It says a family vacation
on Long Island is interrupted by two strangers bearing news of a blackout. As the threat grows
both families must decide how to best survive the potential crisis all while grappling with
their own place in this collapsing world. And it's pretty long. It's two hours and 21 minutes.
It's getting a lot of like good reviews but also a lot of people are hating it because of
the ending isn't great I guess. But it's also number one most searched on streaming today.
So I'm excited to check it out. I don't know if this will even fit in my koozie.
They're embossed even. Like it's a nice bottle.
All right so tonight we're gonna pull a little bit of an audible. The movie was very very good.
I can see why the ending bothers some people but I feel like it was a good ending for that
type of movie. It leaves the questions there. For real it's a very good movie though.
But I've got a few of these backpacking meals. We're just gonna have one of these tonight.
We'll go with this one. I believe that was sent in to the channel.
And I've never had this brand before. So yeah Basecamp creamy pasta chicken.
I had some fancy food to cook tonight but since we didn't start a fire or anything we're just gonna
go simple with it. But we can we can doctor this up a little bit with some of the stuff we have.
There's my chicken. Just chunks of white weirdness. Dehydrated chicken bits.
And to go with this I had some fancy dinner cooked up. We've got some
stuff in here we aren't going to use but we've got some bacon. We'll go ahead and this is fully
cooked bacon. We'll chop some of this up or probably just piece it up and we'll put it in there.
And then got some chips and dip that we got to go along with this. I could have a piece of bacon.
It's like jalapeno popper dip. Had some different plans for this stuff but it'll be all right.
We'll just give this a whirl on its own. See what it's all about right? If I can get it open.
There we go. That only took a little while. So I've got some chips to go with it. These are
Takis kettle chips and they're jalapeno. Jalapeno typhoon. So double jalapeno here.
So you can see where I was probably going with the uh the dinner that I had planned for the campfire.
But I'm sure this will be nice and tasty anyways. Hopefully not too terribly spicy.
Not too shabby. I don't know if I've ever had this dip before. That's a little bit different
than I expected. Now having tasted this dip I'm almost happy that I didn't do what I was going to
do because I don't think that would have been very good on there. All right I think this has
had long enough to hang out. I am very confident in my statement that I'm kind of glad that
I didn't get to make what I was going to make because I don't think that would have been very
tasty. Let's go ahead and take a look at this though. That smells good. Man that looks good even.
Like that looks like straight up chicken pasta. I mean I'm usually not disappointed by these
dehydrated meals but we're definitely gonna put some bacon in there.
But some of them definitely look better than others. This one looks pretty good. Smells really
good too. We'll give it a couple pieces of bacon though. I mean you got to right? Gotta do three
pieces and then one for me. Oh yeah that looks good. See what it's all about I suppose. Oh I got hot sauce.
Can't forget the sauce right? This one was sent in a while back. Came in a box and everything.
Which one is this? Oh it is the, I don't know if you guys will even be able to see it.
It's the corn sauce and that's actually like has corn spelled out and looks the same as like the
band. The band corn. We've got a sticker in there. But yeah if you guys can see that the bottle's a
little bent up. But it says corn on the front of it. So it's corn here to slay hot sauce by Heatnest.
And I don't know if this, this doesn't say anything about who sent it.
Uh Kim out of Waverly, Iowa sent this in. It was a while ago. February of 23.
So sometimes it takes me a while to get to some of these things. But
we'll see what this says on the back here. Says here to slay hot sauce is an ode to our Bakersfield
California roots with a recipe featuring roasted corn, onion, and the best chipotle peppers.
Chipotle. Best chipotle peppers marinated in hot adobo. A healthy splash of pineapple juice adds
just enough sweetness to slay your taste buds. Perfect for meals on the road and at home. Well
we're definitely on the road. Give this a whirl with our bacon first. Got bacon bits in there.
Not too shabby.
There's one of our dehydrated chicken bits. We'll give this a whirl on there. It's kind of cool
that it's got like a twist dab or top kind of deal on there. I guess you can squirt it. There we go.
Oh that's good. That's really good sauce. That's got a kick. I'm gonna end up sweating in here.
But that is tasty dude. I guess I wouldn't think the heatness is gonna put out anything bad.
That's amazing. That's one of the better sauces I've had in a while. I like a sauce that's uh
like that's got a really good flavor but it's not it's not too spicy. Like you can see I'm
putting it on there. Just a really good flavor on that. Yeah the corn sauce. Hopefully you guys
can see that. Like I said I know that's a little bent on the front right there but
that's a surprising sauce. That's a really good one. I'd buy that again. I'd buy that.
Thank you for sending that in. Every bite. That's so good. You can kind of taste the
pineapple in there. Sometimes it's really hard to beat the simplicity of a
freeze-dried meal like this. It's not too spicy but it does have some kick. It does have some kick.
I would say like if you're gonna be out doing this kind of camping stuff like this
you know I try to keep all my stuff in uh kind of somewhat organized and I'm disorganized since
the old truck broke down but we're getting back on track but uh it's always a good idea to have
a few of these. I think I had three of them in there tonight. Three of these dehydrated meals.
I mean I have some other stuff that you know doesn't require any type of cooking in there
like tuna and things like that but these are always really good to have.
They last forever as I say every time and they're good dude. They they taste fine
and then doctor them up with a little bit of bacon and some hot sauce.
All right yo, I got dinner cleaned up. It was very tasty. Simple but tasty. Sometimes that's
best way to go. I'm tired. I'm gonna cry.
Definitely glad I had heat tonight y'all. I gotta get my other sleeping bag in here and
get this stuff all finished up but I'll see you guys in the morning. Get this light shut off.
Get my other lights put up. All that nonsense. Good night y'all.
Oh good morning. Oh man y'all.
Slept good. Place looks nice in the daylight. Oh man.
The lake's down there. Kind of a bummer like there's no good way to get to it from the campground
but there you go. It's hard to tell but it looks like part of the lake might have froze last night.
I've been seeing a lot of little ponds that are like half frozen at this point.
It's just crazy that we don't have or we're having such a mild winter here.
Kind of crazy. It's currently 27 degrees. Feels like 23 and today the high is 48.
50 tomorrow. 48, 48, 52, 47, 51. Like normally it's 20 degrees during the day here at this time
of year you know and we've got snow on the ground. It's just a heat wave of a winter I guess.
I spent some time looking around on maps last night to try to find something cool to go check
out this morning since uh we're kind of we got screwed out of the other thing we wanted to check
out uh the other thing I wanted and uh couldn't really come up with anything so that's kind of a
bummer. If you know I'm saying, know I'm saying. I've got to thinking last night especially with
what I had intended to cook originally um if I'm gonna be places like this where I can plug in
I should get myself a hot plate not you know I've got I've used a
I've used a brain fart. I've used a crock pot in here. Pretty sure I used the
an instant pot back here. I've used like a waffle iron uh quesadilla maker and all that kind of
stuff which is cool but I'm not gonna carry that junk around but I think if I if I found
what and found like a smaller hot plate because I don't need I don't need a big one
but a small hot plate that I could plug in and cook something in here uh without getting my
grill and all that junk set up back here and running gas and whatnot. I think that's probably
probably on the list of things that would be nice to have back here. All right go off for coffee
wake up. Let me use the old french press mug in a while. It'll probably be beneficial to actually
I think it's about ready.
Could use a little bit more water on that one. It's all right though and you just have like a
french press bottom piece on here. This is all kind of jacked up though.
Let that brew up for a little while. Oh I got little uh Hostess, what are they? Coffee cakes.
I haven't had those in a while. That's trash. This has had probably about five minutes.
You just french press it on down there. Just to show you guys the coffee in there if you can
see it. That looks pretty strong. I get asked about this in every video that I use. I'll put
a link in the description if you want to check it out or in their little shop tab or wherever
I can figure out to stick it. Coffee, coffee cake almost cleaned up. I'm gonna get my old
leather pants thrown on and we'll see if we can find a, there's a, there's got to be a trail to
walk down by the lake. Oh no it's not frozen. It looked like it because it was so calm for a second.
It's wide open but let me get changed and we'll wander down by the lake quick and see what that's
all about. Well it's not too bad out here. Sun's pretty bright and it does look like there's a
trail right there. Yeah that's about it. That's all you get to the water. So it actually goes off that
way too into the trees but that was actually, man there's a lot of dead fall down here all over.
Look at that. You know this wouldn't suck to come down here and fish. You can walk right to the water
at least this one little area. There's like just a little bit of frozen water right there, frozen
stuff. But 90% of this is open. Yeah there's deadfall everywhere. It's kind of odd. Not a terrible lake.
Yeah I'm beginning to wonder if we'll really get much of an ice season here this year. I know it's
still early but man if these temperatures continue I don't think it's gonna happen.
It's very hot and strong. Wow not too shabby.
All right y'all I'm gonna get my stuff, kind of last my stuff rounded up. Get this heater unplugged
and I'm probably going to hit the road. Considering it's been so nice out
I might get the van out for the next one. We'll see. I don't want to say that and then have the
weather be bad. They have sprayed some of our bridges and stuff for a couple of the the storms
that we've got but they all kind of fizzled out so I don't know. There ain't much on the roads
right now I guess as far as like Salt or Brine goes. But yeah some difficulties finding a spot
last night. At least a spot that worked. We could have definitely stayed at that first one but
I wanted electricity and it was cold last night. I'm glad I had it. It wasn't a big deal. It's good
to know that you know that spot you can go camp there but there's no electricity. It seems silly
that they shut that off. Seems silly to me but it's an NRD lake. There's different lakes. NRD
lakes are not owned by the state so this is a state campground. But anyways never give up. We
made it to our destination. We did a we did I guess a different meal than I had planned but
I think it probably turned out better than what I was gonna cook based on the way that dip tasted.
But it was all good and the hot sauce was great. The corn sauce was very good too. I feel like that
would be really really good on some fish tacos since it had like that pineapple-y flavor to it.
But yeah but anyways y'all I think I'm just gonna go ahead and close this one out here. Had a great
time in the truck last night. I do need to keep working away on that thing and probably get it
finished up here quicker than quicker sooner sooner rather than later. But yeah as always
stay tuned for the next adventure. I'll see you in a bit.
