Nicholas I was autocracy incarnated. His thirty-year reign, between 1825 and 1855 is synonymous with state terror and paranoid reactionism in the age after the French Revolution. He was a bastion of divine monarchism when Europe and the world were crying out for liberal constitutions, reform and democracy. 

So who really was this bewitching tyrant, and what can we make of him? 

The war in Ukraine, just like the Crimean war, has exposed the true face and unsustainability of Putin’s system. It’s shown the inadequacies of the Russian army, and it’s already having devastating consequences on average Russians. Are we seeing history rhyme again? Will the cycle of state oppression in Russia be broken?
