Many people would be familiar with Wang Zhaojun, one of ancient China’s four great beauties. Many would have heard of the stories about her political marriage with the leader of Xiongnu, a powerful tribal nomadic group on an earlier border of China, which brought long-lasting peace to the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD).

She is widely hailed for her inner beauty in forms of tenacity, courage and righteousness.

"I don't think tenacity can fully express her character. In a period like that, she was courageous enough to marry the leader of Xiongnu even though she had no idea of what she would face, travelling such a far way to the frontier ... She is admirable for her sacrifice and love for her country, " said Dou Shuaifang, a dancer with China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater.
