The back alleys in Bangkok have some of the best food.
But today, I'm going to take you to four Bangkok institutions.
These are restaurants that have thousands of Google reviews.
It's one of my favorites.
Oh, the last one that we're going to is perhaps
the most famous restaurant in all of Bangkok, and I've never been there.
Oh, my. Oh, my.
You know that lady who has the ski goggles
and cooks up the delicious Thai food?
Well, she's super famous.
I'm so excited.
I can't wait for that.
But we're going to be given our honest reviews
of all four of these highly touted places.
And the first place up is right here.
First place we're going to try, it's near BTS Saphan Thaksin area.
And here we go.
It's a Jok Prince.
There are a lot of Google reviews, and I'm so excited to try.
And let's get a seat because it's usually so busy.
Hello, I would like to have a normal time.
You can see nice local spot, but this place is famous.
They have split hours.
They're open super early and then they close, I think, about 1 p.m.
And then they sometimes open again from 3 p.m.
onwards for dinner.
But Jok is like the best brunch meal ever, eh Hayley?
Let's take a look.
Here is a egg I ordered extra.
And here is a pork meatball and ginger, green onion.
It's a must for the Jok.
And I just stir the egg, get a little bit cooked
with a hot temperature of Jok.
So creamy and there is a nice burnt flavor.
That's why this place is so special.
Feels like a very healthy meal.
Hayley's got me excited.
I'm going to dolly it up here.
So for me, number one, this is the sour chili.
It's not as spicy as normal.
It's in vinegar.
I definitely want to start with a few of those.
And for me, a little extra vinegar.
I like vinegary flavor.
And then an absolute must for Jok is the white pepper.
This is a great feature in Thailand.
Now we mix it up.
Oh, that's some food porn for you.
Oh, my. Oh, my.
Swirling around.
I want to bite with a little bit of everything on it.
Jok bread.
They kind of like char the outside of the rice as they're cooking it.
That's their signature here.
In Korea, we have Jok.
And Jok, you shouldn't be burned.
You cannot.
That's a cardinal sin.
But for some reason, this works.
And I love this smoky flavor.
You've got to be careful with this chili powder because it's very, very spicy.
I like a little bit of spicy.
Oh, so good.
That's sweaty.
Yeah.
Giant sweat alert.
Behind the steaming pot is a hot Jok.
The humidity, I think, is at about 130 percent in here.
Oh, my.
Bangkok heat warning when you come to Jok Prince.
Last bite for Hailey.
People leaving, people coming.
This place is hustle and bustle and they serve up amazing stuff.
I'm going to give this place a four point six.
My rating is a four point seven.
She always has to one up me.
All right, cool.
So that's that's brunch.
What do you say we take him to some dinner spots?
We should.
Where are we?
Ah, Sukhumvit, so it's 13 in front of Hyatt.
And we are heading to Soi 11.
And this restaurant named Krua Khun Phuk, always busy.
It's raining out here.
Oh, here's our spot.
Oh, look, we got there's already people.
From Florida.
And is this place delicious?
It is. It is absolutely the best.
Shout out to Michael in New York.
Nice. How would you rate this restaurant?
A favorite.
Been watching you for about three years.
Oh, nice to meet you.
How do you feel about this restaurant?
Brilliant.
This place has, I think, 1500 reviews.
And as Hailey said, it's always packed.
We just got a couple of subscriber reviews on the way in.
But we're going to tell you how much it costs.
And we're also going to tell you what our rating is.
Oh, there are a lot of good stuff I like.
Look at this, one of my favorite.
Stir fry beansprout with tofu.
Dougie, where are you from? Scotland, Dougie?
Scotland, yes.
Ah, I guessed it. Nice to meet you, man.
You live here?
No, no, just a holiday.
Oh, for how long?
Go back to Nades.
Not long enough for Dougie here.
Yeah. Have you eaten here before?
Yeah, it's lovely food here.
Yeah, that's good to hear.
This is our first time.
It's only one question for you, Dougie.
When are you going to move here?
Hopefully soon.
Nice to meet you.
Oh, there's the Tom Yum fried rice.
It's a chive with a Thai bacon, basically.
Mukra.
It's a crispy pork.
In Korea, we eat them.
So I always like it.
But I never tried it in Thailand.
So, mmm.
Oh, it's yummy. You will like it, huh?
It's good?
Oh.
Bean sprout with tofu.
It's one of my favorite veggie dish.
Oh my God, it's a lot.
But I want to try.
And I'm going to try this Tom Yum Goong.
Goong is shrimp in Thai.
Fried rice.
So Tom Yum Goong, usually the soup that you get,
sometimes with noodles,
but they do put it on the fried rice.
Well, they kind of stir fry it all in,
but it's got that
Mmm.
It's pretty good.
I wish it was a little spicier.
So that's where the
fric-nam-bla comes in.
Oh, that's too many.
I'm not Mark Wayne.
Let's get a few of these chilies.
So I've added a chili.
Everything in Thailand is better
with the fish sauce and chili.
That's really tasty.
I like a Tom Yum flavor that punches you in the face.
This one just kind of tickles the inside of your cheeks,
but it is tasty.
Chive with moo krub.
Moo krub is the crispy pork.
Yes.
Oh, that's nice.
A lot of the Thai veggie dishes
are in that oyster sauce flavor.
So they have a similar flavor,
but it's nice to change it up.
We're usually eating morning glory, Chinese kale, cabbage.
We've never had one with chives in it,
and it's awesome.
And my favorite thing is
her crispy pork is extra crispy.
I love that.
Piece of tofu, some bean sprouts.
Yes, you can be healthy in Thailand.
I'm gonna get another dose of this
because I know I'm gonna love it.
But I also know that I want a little sauce,
and I know with 100% certainty
that I want prik nam pla, chili and fish sauce
on top of that.
Oh yeah, this place is good.
I've just discovered that if you combine
these chives and crispy pork
with the tom yum fried rice,
you get something
that just sends you to la la la.
So as a Korean, what do you think
of Thailand's cutlery situation?
Fork, spoon, no chopstick.
It's better than knife and fork
because you can pack food on the spoon neatly,
and I can eat it like this.
Cut the shrimp.
Cut the shrimp, it's easy.
Use the spoon as a knife.
Yeah, or.
Oh, you got the fork going as the knife.
You just eat.
You ordered one too?
Yeah.
Oh man.
Okay, well maybe we eat one here
and we see if they'll pack one up.
But look at how beautiful that is.
The famous mango sticky rice.
When you come to Thailand, you have to have this.
This is coconut sticky rice,
and you get a spoonful of it,
and then you get the mango.
The key is this coconut milk syrup.
Drizzle on fruit,
and then rice a little bit.
Spoonful of rice,
and then fruit.
Mm.
Mango melts in your mouth,
and then rice has a nice coconut flavor,
and this mung bean give you crispy texture.
So it's a three dimension flavor.
Ah!
How much is it?
590, but she give us a big discount.
So it's a 505.
Oh, she's too kind.
Chagi, you gotta rate it.
Give us your rating.
The rating, 4.6.
That's a big score.
I'm going 4.4.
She give us a discount, 90 baht discount.
Oh, YouTube has its privileges.
We got about $2.50 off.
That's pretty good.
So where are we going next?
We are going to another Thai restaurant named Suda.
That place with all the orange sheets?
Yeah.
So Haley's getting us a table.
This place is called Suda.
They only have this green Thai sign,
and it's right across the street
from Terminal 21 shopping mall.
Literally just the other side of the BTS.
Ooh.
Okay, we haven't had a classic Thai fried rice in a while.
This is a good way to judge a spot.
And what's this one?
Pandan chicken.
I never heard of it.
They give prik nam pla right off the bat like this.
That's a good sign.
We approve.
You can't eat fried rice without the prik nam pla.
Fried rice first.
A little bit of chili oil.
How many?
How many, one?
Two.
One per spoonful.
I always like to judge a new Thai restaurant
on their standard chicken fried rice.
Thai fried rice has its own flavor.
Chinese fried rice, when you get a Chinese restaurant,
it also has its own flavor.
To me, the flavor of this is kind of a cross
between the two.
And I think this place does serve,
oh, the chili's got a hold on the back of my throat.
I think they serve Thai Chinese food here too.
So I'm not surprised.
I'm struggling with the chili.
More food coming.
Just a nice plate of stir fried cabbage and oyster sauce.
Baby clam stir fry.
Ooh, it's hot.
It's like Christmas morning, unwrapping the presents.
What's in there?
Chicken, it feels like it's deep fried.
They use the flavor of pandan, the cream.
So, put a little bit of soy sauce.
It's sweet.
Deep fried, but feels like they're roasted as well.
Try the chicken.
I'm going in for one of these.
Lovely.
They're tiny little things.
I don't like a big cockle, a blood cockle,
or a giant oyster.
When it comes to shellfish like this,
I like these little ones,
but I like using the shell as a bit of a ladle
to get up some of this delicious chili sauce.
So then it's a nice, nice bite.
Then you just slurp it down.
This is a great dish.
I think it's called hoi tod prik pao.
Fried clams with sweet chili sauce.
It's got garlic, the chilies.
It looks spicier than it is.
It has a little bit of bite to it, but not too much.
You can find this in a lot of street side restaurants
in Bangkok, and if you've never tried it,
I'd highly recommend it.
Oh yeah, very yummy.
I'm gonna dip a piece right in this sauce
that comes with it.
Just eat it with my hands.
Sweet soy sauce.
That's a nice dish.
It would go well with this one here.
This is the fried cabbage.
They've shredded this.
Often they'll leave it as big cabbage leaves
that you have to cut up.
They've pre-shredded this one.
This is a classic, a great way to get some veggies in.
Mm, I love that dish.
This assortment is incredible.
We got nothing but empty shells.
We ate them all.
We got four dishes, and it's 530 baht.
It's about $17.
Hey Lee, that was the second last place
in this little food tour of these places
that everyone recommends.
What would you rate that one?
4.0.
4.0, that's fair.
There's a lot of foreigners in there.
It's a great location, and the food is really good.
I feel satisfied.
I'd give the clams a 4.8,
and I would give the fried rice a 4.0.
The chicken's gonna be good on the salad.
Yeah, that place is definitely good,
but the next place is perhaps
Bangkok's most famous institution.
Oops, we're blocking people.
Are you excited?
Let's go, we're blocking people.
I've been living in Bangkok for almost five years,
but one might say that I don't really live here yet
because I've never eaten at the one and the only,
the ultra-famous Ran Jai Phi.
You know that lady who has the ski goggles
and cooks up the delicious Thai food?
She had a big Netflix moment?
Well, she's super famous, and I've yet to visit her,
but that's all about to change.
I'm standing outside her place right now.
It's almost dinner time.
I'm excited to see if it's as delicious as everyone says.
Check this out.
Look at the lineup.
She's over there.
We came here several times, but we couldn't wait.
The lineup was already too long.
Normally, we'd show up.
We'd have this crowd behind us.
There's no chance we're getting in,
but I got an inside track.
I got a Thai government,
I think a pretty senior Thai government person here
that is hosting me who's good friends with Ran Jai Phi,
so I believe we're about to skip the line.
Hey, my name's Adriel Talamantes.
I'm a photo and video journalist from the U.S.,
but I've been living here in Bangkok for eight years,
but this is my first time at Jai Phi, surprisingly enough.
I hear it's really good,
and I'm sure it's gonna be really good.
So yeah, this is gonna be our co-host.
The government worker said that she can't go on camera
tonight for some secretive, operative reasons.
The deal here is first, you take a look at the menu,
you gotta order.
How long you been waiting to get in here tonight?
Not long.
Today's not a big queue, just an hour, I think.
Have you been here before?
Not really.
No?
No, no, no.
What did you order?
We ordered an omelette with the crab.
A crab omelette, some yam,
pad kee mao, pad see ew,
and pad kra pao kai dao moo.
Oh, you guys are getting everything.
Yeah, yeah, almost.
Yeah, we need to burn up.
Nice, so from Greece?
Yeah, from Greece.
Yeah, right on, nice to meet you guys.
Nice to meet you too.
Cheers.
Whoa, there is a lot of crab meat.
It's really, really thick.
Whoa, look at this shredded ginger.
Look at this giant shrimp, size of it, like, wow.
This one's pad kee mao,
which basically means drunken noodles.
Kee mao means drunk, like somebody's always drunk.
So, pad is fried, so it means fried drunk,
or always drunk, but it's always assumed to be noodles.
Oh, it's so good.
The crab meat is so fresh and good quality.
It's a jok, dried jok, with a lot of ginger.
So good.
I never seen it before, and my friend recommend this.
So good.
Wow.
I made a mess, look at this.
Giant pepper and ice corn.
So this place has actually exceeded my expectations.
The portions are absolutely massive,
and everything's so fresh, so good.
You know that the noodles are done well
when they're gooey and stretchy like this.
Hayley with J5.
Hayley, how do you feel about that?
Five dollars.
I'm so honored, I'm so excited.
Wow.
Cool.
Thank you.
Back in Asok, we're just pulling up to the last one,
but we forgot to rate J5.
What would you rate J5?
I'm gonna rate 5.0.
I know I'm biased, but I love her.
Hayley, your rating system's a little bit liberal.
I know.
I'm gonna go, I'll give J5 4.7.
That was shockingly good, but tell them where we are here.
We are in Asok area.
This place, I heard, very popular for office worker,
and it's a good price, 40 baht, 50 baht, 60 baht.
So I wanna try.
So my advice to you is,
as good as these places with thousands of Google reviews is,
these little local mom and pop shops
that literally have no name, no sign in English,
they're very nondescript.
There's hundreds of them all over Thailand.
As Hayley goes in and starts to pick two dishes plus rice
or three dishes plus rice,
bunch of home-cooked meals for the day,
these are the places
that really make your Thailand experience special,
as opposed to going to all the places
where all of the other tourists go.
Don't get me wrong, the places we went to in today's video,
all very good and worth a visit,
but you gotta find some local mom and pop shops,
and that's why we made Teeny the app,
where I recommend 500 of my favorite spots in Thailand.
Here's a QR code.
You can download and try it out for free.
Many of the spots in today's video are already in the app.
I'm gonna add a couple of more,
including this little mom and pop shop,
because Hayley and I love this spot,
but we haven't put it in Teeny yet.
Thanks to all the Teeny users.
I love how many people have been using it
since we updated it and made it free.
Hope you check it out,
and I hope you find one of these little holes in the wall.
Now I'm gonna go eat.
