Repay evil with good

Song Jiu was a Regent of the Liang Kingdom during the Autumn and Spring Period. The county he leads is next to the Kingdom of Chu.

Both kingdoms sent troops on the border.

Soldiers from both sides planted melons. However, the Liang army's melons grew abundantly because the soldiers watered them every day. The Chu army's melons did not grow well because they were not watered.

The Chu County executives scolded their soldiers for not caring for their melons as well as the Liang soldiers.

In response to this, Chu soldiers often went to Liang military camps at night to destroy their melons.

The Liang army found out what had happened, and asked Song Jiu to let them go to the Chu camp to take revenge.

“That's not a good solution,” Song replied. “Building hatred will only create problems for yourselves. You can't do evil things just because other people do evil.”

He continued, “Let me give you a good solution. From now on, send someone to the Chu camp every night to water their melons. But don't get caught by them."

The Liang army did as they were told, and not long after, the Chu army saw that their melons were growing better. Finally, they found out that it was because the Liang soldiers often watered their melons every night.

County Chief Chu reported this incident to King Chu, who was extremely embarrassed.

He also sent a pile of gifts to Song Jiu as a sign of apology and signed a peace treaty with King Liang.

Laozi said, “Repay evil deeds with good deeds.” A Chinese proverb tells us to “turn defeat into victory” and “draw good fortune from misfortune.”
