The British invaded Benin on February 9, 1897, and the Kingdom ceased to be an independent entity nine days later on February 18, 1897.

The invaders then went on to loot and steal over 2,400 ivory, bronze and wooden artefacts, many of which are in the British Museum today. #HistoryVille
