TRILLIONS OF PHONE RECORDS OPENLY ACCESSIBLE TO LAW ENFORCEMENT, EVEN WITHOUT A WARRANT.
SENATOR RON WYDEN IS ON A QUEST TO EXPOSE THE PROGRAM AND DEMAND ANSWERS.
N-T-D'S ARLENE RICHARDS HAS MORE.
Senator Ron Wyden is on a mission to expose the Hemisphere program.
The program allows trillions of American phone records to be tracked by law enforcement.
The records can include the phone numbers, dates, times, durations and locations of the
calls and texts, as well as the amount and type of data transferred.
People can use it to see where you go, who you talk to and how often you talk to them.
The records don't include the content of calls and text messages.
A deal between the White House and AT&T has made this possible for the past decade.
Records show the White House has given the program over $6 million.
In Senator Wyden's investigation, he found that law enforcement officials refer to the
program as AT&T's super search engine and Google on steroids.
He found it can identify someone's alternate numbers as well as phone records of everyone
that person talked to.
The outrage should come from the fact that most Americans don't realize that when they
sign up and they agree to the terms of these cell phone providers that they're agreeing
to this level of surveillance.
Brian Horning is the CEO of Exact IT Solutions.
He's concerned the data may fall into the wrong hands.
Our government may not be in control of that data at one point in the future.
That could happen through a cyber attack or that could happen through lots of other ways.
Use your imagination.
But that data does exist and it needs to be protected.
The data can be pieced together to form a profile of a person, all without a warrant,
which Senator Wyden believes may be an illegal invasion of privacy.
Wyden wrote a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland asking him to make information on
the program public.
He says what he's discovered so far would outrage many Americans and other members of
Congress.
